Parcel Management System implemented in Four Railway stations over Madurai Division. Farmers, industrialists, and traders are increasingly using Railway parcel services for the transportation of farm produce / Products merchandise to bigger cities and other desired destinations. Railway parcels service is considered as fast, reliable and economical as compared to other modes of transport.

To ease the movement of parcel consignments over the vast railway network. Parcel Management System (PMS) is being implemented over Indian Railways. In line with this, Madurai Division has implemented PMS in its four major stations including Madurai, Dindigul , Tirunelveli and Rajapalayam and the work for implementing it in another 6 Railway Stations Viz. Tuticorin, Virudhunagar,Rameswaram, Pampan, Sengottai and Tiruchendur are in the final stage.
Advantages - Electronic weighing, Tracking facility and SMS updates
Parcel Management system enable the booking of parcel/luggage at parcel office at the stations through computerised counters and automatic capturing of weight through electronic weighing of consignment.
Through the system, for each consignment, a ten digit Progressive Reference Record (PRR) number is generated and the consignment is barcoded to ease the status updates and tracking. The transmission of the data through the GPRS network enables SMS updates to customers at each stage.
Earnings from Parcels
Parcel handling is one of the sources of revenue to Railways. In the year 2022-23 the Division earned 10.97 crore from the parcel handling. In the Division, at 15 stations having twenty four hour parcel handling facility.
