Lady Doak College Wins "Best College Award" for Contributions to IIT Bombay's FOSSEE GIS Initiative

Dr. Beulah Jeyashree, the Principal and Secretary of Lady Doak College had the honor of receiving the prestigious "Best College Award" in recognition of its significant contributions to IIT Bombay's FOSSEE GIS and Open Source initiatives.


The event commenced with a prayer, followed by a welcome address delivered by Dr. Nimma Elizabeth, Vice-Principal of Lady Doak College. The Principal and Secretary, Dr. Beulah Jeyashree, the Principal and Secretary of Lady Doak College gave the introductory remarks. 


Lady Doak College had the honor of receiving the prestigious "Best College Award" in recognition of its significant contributions to IIT Bombay's FOSSEE GIS and Open Source initiatives. This award was presented during the Open Source GIS Day celebrations on September 15, 2024, at the National Geospatial Awards 2024 ceremony. The award was conferred by Mr. Mohamed Kasim Khan, National Coordinator of FOSSEE GIS (NMEICT), IIT Bombay, on behalf of the organizing committee.


In his speech, Mr. Kasim Khan highlighted the critical role of open-source software and the various opportunities offered by IIT Bombay to students. He commended LDC for integrating open source into its curriculum as early as 2013, an initiative approved by the college’s academic council, and lauded it as a model for other institutions in India. He further emphasized the involvement of Nan Mudhavan Scheme in aligning to the College’s goals with the Sustainable Education Plan (SEP) and discussed the expanding job opportunities in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and its practical applications.


Reflecting on his own journey from Madurai to IIT Bombay, Mr. Kasim Khan encouraged students to apply for projects and internships at prestigious institutions like the IITs. He also mentioned that LDC's project, titled "AI-enabled and GIS-based Asset Management System," was shortlisted among the top 50 projects. This project was developed by Asha Banu from the Center for Information Technology, under the guidance of Dr. Padmaja.


The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Vanitha Malarvizhi, the Bursar of Lady Doak College.
