BIS organised Jeweller Awareness programme on Hallmarking in Andaman

Bureau of Indian Standards is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection.

Bureau of Indian Standards, Chennai Branch Office (CNBO) has conducted 2 Programmes in Andaman Today - A Jeweller awareness programme on Hallmarking today, 26.06.2023 at Hotel Manisha Palace, Andaman in the Forenoon & Meeting Of Union Territory Level Committee On Standardization And Quality systems under the Chairmanship of CHIEF SECRETARY, A & N in the Evening .

Jewellers Association Presidents and around 40 Jewellers from in and around A & N attended the awareness programme. Shri Dinesh Rajagopalan, Scientist-D welcomed the jewellers. Shri USP Yadav, Scientist-F & Deputy Director General (BIS Southern Region) Inaugurated the Programme. Smt. G Bhavani, Scientist-E /Director & Head (Chennai Branch Office) and explained the programme objectives and Growth of Hallmarking. The technical presentation on BIS Hallmarking Scheme & Procedures, Hallmarking Rules & Regulation, Responsibilities of Jewelers, Elements of Indian Standard (IS 1417 & IS 2112) & Amendments, HUID in Brief, Online Registration, Introduction demo in manakonline portal were made by Shri. R Tirumala Rao, Scientist–D / Joint Director & Hallmarking Officer-South. Participants appreciated the BIS initiative on Jewellers Awareness meet. The Programme ended with vote of thanks.

Bureau of Indian Standards, Conducted the Union Territory Level Committee meeting today at CONFERENCE HALL OF SECRETARIAT AT PORT BLAIR, ANDAMAN &  NICOBAR ISLANDS. Various schemes of BIS like the implementation of the standards for piped drinking water supply Management System, Ready mix concrete process certification, Management Systems Certification Scheme, Hallmarking, Conformity Assessment Scheme for Milk and Milk products, Road Traffic Safety Management System, Strategy for implementation of Quality Control Orders issued by Central Government were discussed in detail and various actions were decided by the Committee

The Meeting on “Standardization and Quality Systems” with the Chief Secretary as the Chairperson & Chief Secretary (CS & CA) as the Member Secretary was held today 26.06.23. Apart from the Deputy Director General (South) & Head (Chennai Branch Office) from BIS Bureau of Indian Standards, Secretary(Industries),MD(ANNIDCO),Commissioner(Food Safety), President (A& N Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Chairman (Civil Rights Protection Council), Director (Navodya Foundation), Chief Terminal Manager (IOCL),Principal (DBRAIT) are the Members of the Committee.

The Terms of Reference of the Committee are

1. Identification of areas for formulations of New Indian Standards

2. Identifying Product, Processes and Systems for enforcing compliance with Indian Standards

3. Measures for effective implementation of Quality Control Orders issued by Government of India.

4. Measures for awareness generation among consumers regarding standards. 

It was also proposed that any activities that are aimed to create a robust quality eco system in the State would be part of the objective. During the Meeting, discussions were held with regard to creation of Standardization cells in the UT of A& N whose core work would be to act as a Channel of communication among the Government, Industry and BIS. Apart from this, the committee discussed on Capacity Building of State Government Officials on Standards Formulation, promotion, conformity assessment and consumer outreach.
