Devadoss Hospital, Madurai’s leading multi-specialty Hospital and experts in emergency care services is celebrating the National Bone & Joint Day today. The theme “Each One Train One Save One” emphasizes on training the common man in first aid. Organized by the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA), since 2012, August 4th has been designated as National Bone and Joint Day in India. This annual event coincides with a week-long awareness campaign starting on August 1st to August 6th.

Addressing the media, Prof. Dr. A. Devadoss, Chairman, Devadoss Hospitalsaid, “The primary objective of celebrating National Bone & Joint Day is to raise awareness about bone health among the Indian population and promote cost-effective measures for the prevention and treatment of bone and joint conditions. Throughout the country, IOA's chapters organize virtual health education lectures for students and the public and our Hospital is leading this initiative in Madurai,”.

“This year’s theme is all about training one person who can save atleast one person’s life. Statistically speaking,  India ranks No. 1 in terms of road traffic accidents deaths across the 199 countries reported in the World Road Statistics. The highest number of accidents happen in the age group of 18-45 years. This age groupaccounts for nearly 69.3 percent of all road accident victims in India with men leading at 86% and women at 14%,” pointed out Dr. Devadoss.

Expanding on the theme, Dr. Sathish Devadoss, Vice Chairman, Devadoss Hospital said, “Most of these accident deaths is due to the lack of medical care or first aid in the golden hour after an accident takes place. These accident deaths can certainly be reduced if proper first aid or even basic life support is given to the victim(s).In this regard, we, intend to train the common man. The common man could be anyone. A housewife, a street vendor, an auto rickshaw driver, a roadside shop keeper, a stall owner and even the traffic police constable on duty to undergo a basic training course,”.

“We have set a target of training over 1 Lakh people in the coming year starting this week. It is an ambitious target that we have set forth for ourselves. Many NGOs, Associations and Government bodies are willing to join us in this initiative to save lives,” Dr. Sathish Devadoss added.

Prof. Dr A. Devadoss and Dr. Sathish Devadoss was joined by Dr.D.C.Deepak, Joint Replacement Surgeon, Dr.B.Pradeep, Arthroscopy & Sports Medicine, and Dr.Vibhu Krishnan, Spine Surgeon of Devadoss Hospital who shared their insights and expertise on the various training programs to be undertaken at Devadoss Hospital.
