Department of Fisheries organises workshop on Sustainability of Marine Fisheries

Chennai Zonal Base of Fishery Survey of India (FSI), Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying conducted a one-day Regional Workshop on “Sustainability of Marine Fisheries in the South East coast of India” at Fisheries Training Institute Kalikuppam, Karaikal on 07 February 2024.

As a part of the workshop various exhibits were displayed at the venue on Pradhan Manthri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)-sponsored project on marine mammal stock assessment in India, deployment of artificial reefs, various fishing gear models, fish blowups and fishery charts. The workshop was inaugurated by Shri A Kulothungan District Collector, Karaikal as chief guest and addressed the gathering.

Dr. R. Jeyabaskaran, Director General, FSI presided over the function and delivered the keynote address. Shri A. Mohamad Ismail Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Puducherry was the guest of honor. Shri A. Tiburtius, Zonal Director, Fishery Survey of India, Chennai delivered the welcome address and Dr. P. Govindasaamy Deputy Director, Dept of Fisheries Karaikal delivered the vote of thanks. 

As part of the workshop a technical session was arranged wherein six scientific papers on the survey findings of the organization, safety measurements to be taken at sea and Marine mammal stock assessment in India were presented by the FSI Scientists, Dr A John Chembian, Shri. Y. Tharumar, Dr. C. Babu, Dr. K. Silambarasan and Dr. Roshan Maria Peter. In addition, awareness on safety at sea and how to rectify the engine problems onboard the vessels explained by vessel engineer Shri M. Subash.
