Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s Department of Environmental Sciences celebrated the World Environment Day (WED) 2024 on 5th June with the theme of “Land restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience”. The programme started with a human chain flagged off by Dr.R.Thamizh Vendan, Registrar. Tree seedlings were distributed to the general public and the passersby as a part of land restoration and drought resilience activity.
To make aware the public on the ban of one-use plastics, Manjappai (Yellow cloth bag) were also distributed. As a mark of protecting our water bodies, two eminent social workers, Mr.Sadasivam Sivasamy, Coordinator, Koushika Neerkarangal and Mr.Ajithsaithanya, Trustee, Noyyalaru Trust shared their experiences on the status and the actions to be taken for their restoration. Dr.P.Dhevagi, Professor and Head, Department of Environmental Sciences welcomed the gathering and narrated the history of WED celebrations. Dr.P.Balasubramaniam, Director (DNRM) felicitated the programme and stressed the importance of soil health in boosting agricultural productivity.
During the presidential address, Dr.R.Thamizh Vendan, Registrar pointed out that the environmental issues deteriorating the land and society have to be addressed and immediate actions are required to restore for future generations. Various competitions were conducted for the students depicting the theme of WED 2024 and the winners were awarded with prizes and certificates.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Dr.M.Maheswari, Professor, acknowledging the collective efforts and enthusiasm of all the participants as well as the sponsors, ITC Limited and Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Coimbatore.
