The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is a statutory body operating under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It administers several schemes including Product Certification (ISI Mark), Management Systems Certification, Hallmarking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts, and Laboratory Services.
These schemes are designed to benefit industries by ensuring standards compliance and, consequently, aim to protect consumer interests. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, through the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, issued the High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)/ Polypropylene (PP) Woven Sacks for Packaging of 50 kg Cement (Quality Control) Order, 2023. This order aims to bring High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)/ Polypropylene (PP) Woven Sacks used for packaging 50 kg Cement within the scope of the BIS Compulsory Certification Scheme.
The quality control order will come into effect on 06 September 2024. The Bureau of Indian Standards' Hyderabad Branch Office, in collaboration with The Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Woven Sacks Manufacturers Association and CIPET Hyderabad, organized an Industry Sensitization Programme on the Quality Control Order at its Hyderabad Branch Office on 05 July 2024. The objective of this program was to facilitate the effective implementation of the Quality Control Order by certifying industrial units that manufacture HDPE/PP Woven Sacks.
Additionally, it aimed to educate the industry about BIS and assist them in obtaining the BIS License. Approximately 30 participants attended the program. Shri P V Srikanth, Scientist-E/Director & Head (Hyderabad Branch Office), addressed the participants and explained about the importance of this Programme. Smt S Savitha, Scientist D/Joint Director explained about BIS and the new initiatives of BIS. She also conducted technical Session on Indian Standard 11652:2017 High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)/ Polypropylene (PP) Woven Sacks for Packaging of 50 kg Cement covered under Quality Control Order, 2023.
She also explained the participants about How to apply for BIS Certification Licence; Understanding Product Manuals & Provisions of BIS Act 2016. Mr. Dr. V Kiran Kumar, Chief Manager, CIPET Hyderabad, provided insights into the testing equipment used for product testing. He elaborated on the testing facilities available at CIPET Hyderabad and assured support for testing services offered by their organization.
