Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Madurai as a part of Standards Promotion Activity conducted Manak Manthan – Discussion on Indian Standard IS 374:2019 Electric Ceiling Type Fans at SRM Hotel, Thoothukudi on 31th June 2024. 56 participants attended the meeting which was held in hybrid mode. The participants represented various stakeholders such as Manufacturers, Industry Associations, representatives from Venus Home Appliances Pvt Ltd, only licensee under BIS Madurai Jurisdiction for ceiling fans, Representatives from Laboratories, Students and faculties of Grace College of Engineering, Thoothukudi.


IS 374:2019 covers the performance requirements for single phase 50 Hz a.c. ceiling fans driven by squirrel cage induction motor, capacitor type and brushless d.c. motor fans up to and including 250 V for household and similar purposes. This standard is in line with International Standards on safety, performances and construction of electric circulating fans and regulators, viz. IEC 60879:1986 ‘Performance and construction of electric circulating fans and regulators’ issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The details of the safety requirements are separately given in IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 80), ‘Safety of household and similar electrical appliances: Part 2 Particular requirements, Section 80 Electric fans.


ISI mark on Ceiling fans have become mandatory vide Quality Control Order S.O. 3641(E) from 09th February 2024. No manufacturer/trader/dealer can manufacture, sell or store ceiling fans without a valid BIS license after 09.02.2024. The ISI mark is marked on the ceiling fan and not on the packaging material. Before purchasing a ceiling fan, consumers may verify the authenticity of the ISI mark and license number using BIS CARE App which can be downloaded from Google playstore and App Store.


Smt. Hemalatha Panicker, Joint Director, BIS, Madurai presented a brief introduction on core activities of BIS, Standardization, Conformity assessment scheme and features of BIS CARE App. An in-depth presentation on IS 374:2019 was delivered by Shri A. Arivazhagan, Joint Director, BIS, Madurai and Smt. S. Sujatha, Head, QA, Venus Home Appliances Pvt Ltd, Thoothukudi.


After the presentation a detailed open house discussion was held and several queries regarding the standards were clarified. A quiz competition was also carried out for the students on ceiling fans wherein students enthusiastically participated. Participants were also requested to send technical queries/comments pertaining to this Indian Standard by email.
