Annai Velankanni Hospital, a leading multispeciality hospital in the city, successfully performed a complex laparoscopic surgery on a 24-year-old woman who was 22 weeks pregnant and removed her right kidney, which had a huge hydroureteronephrotic cyst. The surgery was performed as an emergency measure, as the growing cyst posed a significant risk to the baby’s development and could have led to life-threatening complications for the mother during delivery.
24 years old female patient , a resident of Kallikulam, conceived her first child in August last year, with her due date set for the third week of June this year. However, she began experiencing severe abdominal pain during 22 weeks of her pregnancy and was admitted to the hospital. Upon conducting a scan diagnosis showed a large cystic lesion in right side of abdomen with hydroureteronephrosis of size 20*16*15cms which was confirmed with MRI scan. On performing diagnostic laparoscopy the diagnosis of polycystic kidney with large hydroureteronephrotic cyst was done intrauterine and proceeded for a surgery. Given the potential risks posed by the growing cyst, which could exert pressure on the womb and hinder the baby’s development, the ‘laparoscopic nephrectomy’was performed and removed the deceased kidney.
Dr.Antony raj, HOD general and laparoscopic surgery with his team of surgeons, OT staff, nurses and technicians performed the surgery.
In his comments, Dr. Antony Raj said, “A polycystic kidney with huge hudroureteronephrotic cyst in pregnant women is rare. Only about 2% of pregnant women develop it. The cyst, along with the deceased kidney, has to be removed immediately. However, the surgery can be challenging, considering the safety of the baby. We could do it thanks to our expertise in laparoscopic procedures, and the presence of sophisticated infrastructure and high-end technology.”
He added that “with over 25 years of experience in laparoscopic surgery, our hospital has been at the forefront of minimally invasive procedures. High risk procedures, such as nephrectomy in pregnant women, with successful outcomes leading to safe deliveries. In the face of increasing infertility rates, we take pride in performing numerous laparoscopic infertility procedures, which have produced many positive pregnancy reports.”
Annai Velankanni Hospital set up the STRYKER Laparoscopy Unit, the first of its kind in Asia, in 2014. The technology allows the hospital to offer unmatched expertise in performing a wide range of surgeries, including basic surgeries like appendicitis, gallbladder removal , haemorrhoids to extensive hernias, gastrointestinal and oncology surgeries. Its specialised team has also expanded to handle complex neonatology (below 1 year of age) cases, including minimally invasive surgeries like splenectomy, undescended testis, decortication of empyema lung, meningocele excision (day 2 of life) and nephrectomy (below 6 months), with excellent recovery outcomes.
Having successfully completed more than 15,000 surgeries, our laparoscopy-to-open-case conversion rate remains below 1%, demonstrating our precision and expertise. Basic surgeries.
