A delegation representing the Tamil Nadu business community, led by Dr. K. Thirumurugan of the Appalam Vadagam Manufacturers & Sellers Welfare Association, submitted a detailed memorandum to the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M.K. Stalin. The petition highlights pressing concerns and key demands aimed at improving the ease of doing business and addressing taxation issues faced by traders in the state.
Key Demands Raised:
Reversal of GST on Rent via RCM: Immediate withdrawal of the GST Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM) on rent as per Central Government Notification No. 9/2024.
Curbing Utility and Fee Hikes: Elimination of hikes in electricity tariffs, trade license fees, and professional tax.
Simplified Unified Taxation System: Consolidation of multiple levies such as trade licenses, professional tax, garbage tax, and property tax into a single unified tax structure.
Suspension of Property Tax Increases: Immediate halt to the 6% annual property tax hike.
Streamlined Licensing: Introduction of a single trade license accessible through a one-stop portal.
Monthly Electricity Billing: Implementation of a monthly billing system for electricity usage.
Amendments to Enforcement Practices: A shift from punitive measures, such as vehicle detentions and heavy fines for minor violations, to awareness-driven corrections and office-based dispute resolutions for major infractions.
Appeal to the State Government:
The association emphasized the need for sustainable reforms to support the livelihood of traders and create an investor-friendly environment in Tamil Nadu. They urged the state government to champion these demands at both state and central levels, ensuring swift action and practical resolutions.
Speaking on behalf of the traders, Dr. Thirumurugan expressed confidence in the Chief Minister’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and growth-oriented economy. "Our requests aim to reduce the financial and procedural burden on traders, ensuring a robust business ecosystem in Tamil Nadu," he stated.
The business community looks forward to prompt intervention by the Tamil Nadu government to address these critical issues, ensuring a balanced approach to revenue generation and trader welfare.
