Two Days Training Programme on Best Practices and Enforcement of Drugs and Cosmetics Act by CCRS

The Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS), Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India, is organizing a two-day training programme on "Best Practices and Enforcement of Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940, Rules 1945 & Drugs and Magic Remedies Act 1954" in association with All India Institute of Ayurveda, (National Pharmacovigilance Co-ordination Centre), Directorate of Indian medicine & Homeopathy, State Licensing Authority for Indian Medicine, Govt. of Tamil Nadu on 5th and 6th December 2024.


The programme aims to address key issues related to the Enforcement of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, 1954, and the regulations governing ASU drugs. It will focus on regulatory compliance, licensing requirements, and quality assurance for ASU drugs, exploring the roles and responsibilities of drug inspectors and the importance of pharmacovigilance. This collaborative initiative aims to empower the stake holders especially drug inspectors, faculty members of Siddha colleges, Pharmacovigilance Co-ordinators and Siddha pharmaceutical companies.


The two-day training programme will cover a range of topics, including current trends in pharmacovigilance, roles and responsibilities of drug inspectors, regulatory compliance and enforcement, quality assurance, labelling requirements, and licensing procedures for ASU drug manufacturers. Additionally, the program will delve into pilot clinical studies for new drug development, reporting mechanisms for adverse drug reactions and misleading advertisements, and an interactive session on enforcing the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, Rules, 1945, and the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, 1954.


The expected outcomes of the programme include:


Enhanced understanding of the regulatory framework governing ASU drugs

Improved knowledge of pharmacovigilance and its importance in ensuring the safety and efficacy of ASU drugs

Increased awareness of the roles and responsibilities of drug inspectors in enforcing the D&C Act, 1940 and Rules, 1945

Better understanding of the labeling requirements and Certificate of Analysis (CoA) for Ayush drugs

Improved compliance with regulatory requirements and enforcement of the D&C Act, 1940 and Rules, 1945


The training program was inaugurated on 5th December 2024, with a welcome address by Dr. S. Selvarajan, Research Officer (Siddha), Scientist-IV & Programme Officer, CCRS. The inaugural address will be delivered by Prof. Dr. N. J. Muthukumar, Director General, CCRS.


Other dignitaries who will address the programme include Prof. Dr. Galib, Addl. Professor and Co-ordinator, NPvCC-AIIA, and Prof. Dr. V. Banumathi, Chairman, Scientific Advisory Board, CCRS. The Guest of Honour, Dr. Kousthubha Upadhyaya, Adviser (Ay), Drug Policy Section, Ministry of Ayush, will release the Training Proceedings and deliver the keynote address.


Tmt. M. Vijayalakshmi, Commissioner, Directorate of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (DIM&H) will deliver the Chief Guest address and impart the importance of this training programme. Dr. P. Parthibhan, Joint Director, DIM&H will deliver the felicitation The vote of thanks will be delivered by Dr. Y. R. Manekshah, State Licensing Authority for Indian Medicine, DIM&H, Chennai.


Eleven Resource personnel from various domains will equip the participants. This training programme is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the regulatory landscape, strengthen pharmacovigilance systems, and promote the global growth of Siddha medicine.
