Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India working under the aegis of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Government of India. The principal activities of BIS include Standards Formulation, Conformity Assessment, Management Systems and Certification of Hallmarking of Gold & Silver and quality related matters extending its services to industry, trade, commerce and common Consumers. The BIS Act 2016 mandates us to formulate and promote these standards across the country.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) celebrates its Foundation Day on January 6th, marking the establishment of a pivotal institution committed to promoting and maintaining standards across industries in India. Established in 1987 by an Act of Parliament, BIS succeeded the Indian Standards Institution (ISI), which was formed in 1947. Over the years, BIS has evolved to meet the dynamic needs of industries and consumers, fostering innovation and sustainability while adhering to global best practices.
On the Eve of BIS Foundation Day, BIS organised a Day Long Meeting with Industries on 06 Jan 2025 at Tamil Nādu Open University Academic Block, Chennai.
In continuation to the programme, Bureau of Indian Standards Chennai Branch organized a Standards Carnival in association with Sri Sairam Engineering College & Participation by Industries & Students at Sri Sairam Engineering College on 09 January 2025.
The Carnival was inaugurated by Smt. G. Bhavani, Scientist-F/ Senior Director & Head of the Chennai Branch Office and the Officials of BIS were present during the event.
The event witnessed lots of activities which include around 27 stalls by BIS licensees displaying Quality Marked Products and explained about the importance of BIS Certification on these Products; More than 6000 students from Schools and Colleges are visited these stalls; In addition, competitions such as Essay Writing, Quiz, Painting, English Elocution, Treasure Hunt on Quality & Standards were conducted at venue and the winners were awarded Prizes.
BIS Officials also interacted with the students and created awareness about the various schemes of BIS and how BIS Plays an important role in their everyday life.
This event promised to be a remarkable occasion where students had interaction with Industry, Academia & BIS and got exposure regarding the importance of Quality, Standardization and also practical aspects of implementation of Quality in the country.
