BIS organized Manak Manthan on "Indian Standards on Artificial Limbs, Rehabilitation Appliances and Equipment for the Persons with Disability” at Tamilnadu Open University - Academic Block, Chennai on 29.01.25
Smt.G.Bhavani Scientist-F / Sr.Director & Head (Chennai Branch Office) welcomed the Chief Guest , Dignitaries and participants and explained the Programme Objectives. In her speech, she informed that The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has established comprehensive specifications for artificial limbs, rehabilitation appliances, and other assistive equipment to enhance mobility and accessibility for individuals with disabilities. These standards aim to ensure safety, durability, comfort, and usability across various assistive devices.
Smt.Meenakshi Ganesan, Scientist-G & Deputy Director General (Southern Region-BIS) in her Key Note Address informed that these standards are instrumental in achieving India’s vision of inclusivity and accessibility under initiatives like the Accessible India Campaign. For manufacturers, they provide a clear roadmap for innovation, compliance, and quality assurance. From a consumer’s perspective, they ensure access to reliable and customizable products, enhancing independence and mobility for persons with disabilities.
She also added that by adhering to BIS specifications, manufacturers align with national and global benchmarks, promoting cost optimization, market competitiveness, and improved quality of life for end users. Indian Standards for artificial limbs, rehabilitation appliances, and mobility equipment ensure functionality, safety, and accessibility for users of all ages. Through innovation and adherence to these specifications, manufacturers can address diverse needs and foster a more inclusive society.
Prof. Dr. V Chockalingam M.D, D.M (cardiology), f.a.c.c(usa) d.sc prof. Emeritus, cardiology tn. Dr.MGR Medical University, Chennai was the chief guest for the programme. During his inaugural address, he appreciated the efforts taken by BIS in organizing series of discussion-programmes titled “Manak Manthan” for the benefit of industry which is scheduled on every month, and is envisaged to launch new standards and share important revisions / amendments and wide circulation drafts to local manufacturers, Industrial and Trade Bodies, Chambers of Commerce, Industry Associations, PSU’s or organizations who use such products, Government departments, Regulatory bodies, Laboratories, Civil society groups and Academia.
