Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body of India is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection.
BIS organized Manak Manthan on "LABOUR SAFETY AT WORK PLACE” at Thiruvalluvar Mini Auditorium, Tamilnadu Open University, Chennai Today 26 Feb 2025.
Smt.G.Bhavani Scientist-F / Sr.Director & Head (Chennai Branch Office) welcomed the Chief Guest , Dignitaries and participants. In her speech, she informed that Every year, thousands of workplace accidents occur due to poor safety measures. Imagine working without proper respiratory masks in a dusty environment or climbing heights without a secure harness—the risks are immense! That’s why BIS has developed Indian Standards (IS) to ensure workers have the best protective equipment and workplace safety systems in place. By following Indian Standards, employers reduce accidents, workers stay protected, and industries build trust with their employees. At BIS, we ensure that safety is not just a guideline but a commitment to protecting lives.
She also added that at Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), ensuring safety at workplaces is our top priority. Whether you are a factory worker, a construction professional, or someone working in hazardous environments, safety standards are what stand between you and potential risks. She informed that these standards are not just for large industries or factories; they are beneficial for construction companies, small businesses, safety officers, government organizations, educational institutions, research labs, and even self-employed professionals working in hazardous conditions. By implementing these standards, businesses can ensure a safer environment for their employees, reduce risks, and enhance productivity. Even consumers can look for BIS-certified safety products to ensure they meet the highest quality benchmarks.
Shri. M.V. Karthikeyan, Joint Director, The Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health, was the Chief Guest for the Programme. During his Inaugural Address appreciated the efforts taken by BIS in organizing series of discussion-programmes titled “Manak Manthan” for the benefit of industry which is scheduled on every month, and is envisaged to launch new standards and share important revisions / amendments and wide circulation drafts to local manufacturers, Industrial and Trade Bodies, Chambers of Commerce, Industry Associations, PSU’s or organizations who use such products, Government departments, Regulatory bodies, Laboratories, Civil society groups and Academia.
Smt. Anurita Nidhi Hemrom, Scientist-C / Deputy Director explained the participants about BIS, E-BIS and conduct a Technical Discussion on Breathe Safely Standards IS 9473, IS 14166, and IS 14746 ; Shield Your Eyes & Ears: IS 8521 and IS 9167 ;Prevent Falls, Save Lives: IS 3521 (Parts 1-9); Stay Fire-Proof: IS 15748; Healthy Workplaces, Fewer Accidents: ISO 45001, IS 14489, and IS 9623; Helmet & Footwear Safety: Hard hats (IS 2925) and protective footwear (CHD 19).
Around 81 Stakeholders on the subject matter attended the Programme.
