Fatty liver, a condition characterized by excess fat accumulation in the liver, has been on the rise in recent times-mainly due to unhealthy lifestyles, obesity, and diabetes. Early diagnosis, timely treatment, lifestyle modifications, and proper management of underlying health conditions are crucial to protect liver health, urged health experts of Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital.

Speaking at a press meet held to mark World Liver Day, observed annually on April 19, experts pointed out that unhealthy diets, frequent consumption of bakery items, sugary beverages, and alcoholare increasingly contributing to liver disease, especially among young adults. These habits can also lead to metabolic disorders like obesity and diabetes. They emphasised the importance of a nutritious diet in maintaining liver health and preventing liver disease, echoing this year’s theme, “Food is Medicine”.

The experts emphasised that routine screening and Liver Function Tests (LFTs) are essential, as early detection can prevent further damage. Symptoms like jaundice, fatigue, and signs of hepatitis often appear only in the later stages, by which time significant harm may already be done.

In his comments, Dr. Ramesh Ardhanari, Medical Director, Senior Consultant & HOD, Department of Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology said,“Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), commonly known as fatty liver, affects one in three adults, primarily due to poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles. If left unaddressed, it can progress to cirrhosis or cause irreversible liver damage. Alarmingly, childhood obesity is emerging as a significant contributor, often leading to liver disease identified only at later stages. This underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle, avoiding alcohol, keeping an ideal body weight, and engaging in regular physical activity to protect liver health.Awareness about Hepatitis viruses, their prevention, and early treatment is crucial in preventing complications and reducing the risk of liver-related health issues.

In his comments, Dr.Srinivasan Ramachandran, Senior Consultant, Department of Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology added that the hospital has performed over 55 deceased donor liver transplants for end-stage liver disease so far. We've also seen cases where patients develop liver tumors without clear underlying causes. Liver tumors affect 3-4 people per 1 lakh population, and early detection can provide an opportunity for curative surgery.

In his comments, Dr. Mohan, Senior Consultant, Department of Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology, said, “Nearly 90% of liver diseases can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes and the adoption of a nutritious, balanced diet. Choosing foods rich in fibre, protein, healthy fats, whole grains, and seasonal fruits and vegetables supports optimal liver function and overall health. A well-rounded diet also helps the liver combat conditions such as fatty liver and inflammation. Beyond nutrition, staying physically active plays a vital role in liver wellness. Regular exercise, including a mix of cardio and strength training, helps maintain a healthy weight, supports metabolism, and reduces fat buildup in the liver. Avoiding alcohol, staying well-hydrated, and refraining from tobacco use and self-medication are also crucial lifestyle choices that protect liver health.” Dr. Srividya, Associate Consultant, Department of Medical and Surgical Gastroenterology, was also present during the event.

As part of the N. Sethuraman Oration by the ASI Madurai Chapter and to commemorate World Liver Day, the hospital organised a hands-on demonstration of the Da Vinci surgical robot, along with a video lecture on April 18, 2025. During the event, the President of ASI Madurai City Branch, Dr. M. Ramesh M.S, M.Ch (Onco), Chairman of ASI Madurai City Branch, delivered the Chairman Address during the event. Dr. C. Sarvanan M.S, Secretary of ASI Madurai City Branch, presented the Secretary Report.Dr. M. Satishkumar M.S, M.Ch (Onco), Treasurer of ASI Madurai City Branch, delivered the Vote of Thanks at the conclusion of the event. It is to be noted that the first Robotic liver surgery in South Tamilnadu was performed at Meenakshi Mission Hospital.
