The Eye Foundation, Coimbatore has introduced a next-generation Laser Vision Correction technology called SMILE PRO for the first time in the region.
This system represents a breakthrough in minimally invasive refractive surgery for correcting myopia and astigmatism. The procedure including lenticule creation could be done in just 8 seconds per eye with almost no stress and discomfort for the patients. They typically notice vision improvement immediately after the procedure and return to routine activities within 24 hours.

Dr.Ramamurthy, Chairman and Dr.Chitra Ramamurthy, Medical Director, The Eye Foundation said that they introduced the system in their Coimbatore centre 1.5 months ago and have done no 500 procedures using it, offering outstanding results for patients. Dr.Shreyas Ramamurthy- Consultant, Cornea, Cataract & Refractive Services and also the Managing Director, The Eye Foundation, made a live procedure on a patient using this system on Thursday during a press conference, and Dr.Ramamurthy explained to the media about it to the reporters.
Taking part in the press conference, he said that The Eye Foundation has been using SMILE for the last 12 years and have now moved on to its advanced version SMILE PRO - which is eventually a faster and more accurate laser. "Our main is to deliver quality outcomes to patients while keeping abreast with technology," he said.
Speaking about the advantages of SMILE PRO, he said it comes with the ability to customise to different eye patterns which was not available in the previous version. The laser in this system is so fast and advanced that the entire treatment duration takes only 8 seconds and the eye-power correction is quick, there is no pain or discomfort to the patients. The accuracy of the procedure is remarkable and the recovery of the patients is swift. They can return to work, use their mobile, tv, drive their vehicles from the next day morning.
He added that The Eye Foundation is the only eye-care hospital in India to have both SMILE PRO and Advanced Contoura System under a roof.
