BIS Chennai Highlights Role of Standards in Medical Devices at Anna University Seminar

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office the National Standards Body of India functioning under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, participated in Seminar cum Exhibition on Medical Devices at Anna University on 29th Aug 2025 coordinated by ATMED (Association of Tamil Nadu Medical Device Industry) and hosted half day technical session on 30th Aug 2025 for the participants stakeholders from medical devices related industry.


On 29 Aug 2025, Seminar cum Exhibition speakers from CDSCO, premier educational institutions, and Chief Guest lecture by Dr. Ezhilan Naganathan, MD (MLA), Member, Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission.  During the seminar cum exhibition brief speech delivered by Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Deputy Director General Southern Region, BIS on the importance of the role of Standardisation in the Medical Devices and related industry and Indian Standards  formulated by the BIS after consultation of relevant stakeholders for the benefit of the Medical Devices Industry. 


Chennai Branch Office has set up a stall with the display of information, to reach out to manufacturers of Medical Devices Industry with an aim to popularise the existing schemes of certification especially for MSME units, and BIS Stall has witnessed the quite number of aspiring manufacturers to know Standards pertaining to the medical devices related industry & certification procedures.


On 30 Aug 2025, an exclusive technical session on Medical Devices / organised by BIS (Chennai Branch Office) in association with ATMED for 40 participants from industry & laboratories at the campus of BIS, Chennai Office.


Shri. SD Dayanand, Scientist F / Sr Director & Head of Chennai Branch Office has welcomed the participants and delivered the program objectives, stressing the benefits of certification by BIS.


Shri. Jeevanandam D, Scientist E / Director has delivered the presentation covering  evolution of Standardisation in the country in the name of Indian Standard Institution (ISI) pre-Independence, ISI renamed as BIS with brief mentioning of various activities of BIS in a nutshell and continual support program like capsule course program to train the quality control personnel of industries. He encouraged the participants to download BIS CARE APP, to become an informed and vigilant consumer. 


Ms. Nagavarshini Mayakannan, Scientist C / Deputy Director, Medical Hospital Planning Department (MHD), New Delhi has delivered an elaborative presentation on various standards available for Medical field industry and highlighted standardisation culture could eliminate possible / probable failure of product, in turn causing injury / damage to the consumer. She also informed that  three different Indian Standards ie for Diagnostic Medical X-Ray Equipment as per IS 7620 (part 1) and Clinical thermometers as per IS 3055 part 1 & part 2 are covered already under Mandatory Certification by BIS and 58 different Medical field standards are covered under voluntary certification by BIS. She also added that according to these mentioned Indian Standards, licences were granted  to 255 manufacturers to use Standard Mark on the product as per Indian Standards as on date.


Mr D L Pandya, Convenor, Indian Medical Devices Industry Conferences (IMDI), Mr. Jaysing, General Secretary & Mr Samuel W George, President of Association of Tamil Nadu Medical Devices Industry expressed gratitude and thanked the BIS Chennai Branch Office for bridging the industry and consumers / relevant stakeholders. 


Participants’ queries were appropriately addressed and stressed that they are looking forward to a more such useful program by BIS for the industry. The meeting ended with vote of thanks.
