The Department of Tourism Studies, Pondicherry University, organised the World Tourism Day 2025 celebrations in line with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) annual observance. This year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, highlights the pivotal role of tourism in driving inclusive growth, sustainability, and cultural preservation.
The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. K. Tharanikkarasu, Director (SEI&RR), Pondicherry University. Prof. Sibi. P.S., Head, Department of Tourism Studies delivered the welcome address, Prof. Sampada Kumar Swain envisioned the scope of the event and Prof. P. Natarajan, Dean, School of Management conveyed the felicitation address. Shri Steve Borgia, Chairman & MD of INDeco Hotels, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Speaking about the significance of the celebration, Prof. Sibi. P.S., Head of the Department, said, “World Tourism Day is a global platform to remind ourselves of tourism’s role in shaping communities and economies. At Pondicherry University, we are committed to nurturing future leaders who will drive sustainable tourism practices”. Echoing the theme, Chief Guest Shri Steve Borgia remarked, “Sustainability is no longer a choice but a necessity. Tourism has the power to transform societies when it respects local cultures, resources, and livelihoods.” He also encouraged the students to take up opportunities and create meaningful experiences.
As part of the celebrations, a Workshop on Sustainable Tourism Practices was conducted, featuring distinguished resource persons, including Ms. Sweta Mathur (Nilayana Studios, Boku Ramen, Canteen 18, Sno Studio), Ms. Sahithi Divi, (Sr. Consultant – Government of Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department & Advisor, Auroville Bamboo Centre), Mr. Sebin Philip (Gemking, Japakusuma, Peace Garden, 13DB Festival), Mr. Gowri Shankar (Faborg, pioneer of Waganool), and Mr. Puviarasan (Outdoor Being).
The celebrations also featured vibrant competitions, an awareness rally, open mic performances, and food & handicraft stalls, reflecting the cultural richness and creativity of students and the community. The Department of Tourism Studies, through this celebration, reaffirms its commitment to promoting sustainable and responsible tourism that contributes to the holistic development of society.
