The Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology (COXBIT) at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore and Department of Plant Biotechnology, Centre for Plant Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (CPMB&B), jointly organized a guest lecture on October 25th, 2025 on “Plant genomics in the era of big data and AI by Dr. Sumanth Mutte, Founder and CEO of Mygen Informatics Pvt. Ltd. The session aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications of statistics in solving real-world biological problems. The under graduates of B. Tech (Biotechnology) & (Bioinformatics) (150 Nos.) were participated in this event.

Dr. Sumanth Mutte began his lecture by emphasizing the growing importance of statistical tools in modern biological research. He explained how vast amounts of biological data, generated through genomics studies, can be efficiently processed and interpreted using statistical approaches. He highlighted methods to narrow down large datasets to identify meaningful patterns and potential solutions, which is crucial in areas such as development of probiotics, soil microbiome and genetic analysis.

The speaker also shared insights on the global opportunities in the field of bioinformatics, emphasizing that the combination of biology, computer science and statistics has opened up diverse career paths for students. He encouraged participants to build strong analytical and computational skills to meet the growing demands of the biotechnology and data science industries.

The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment, where  Dr. Sumanth addressed queries from students regarding career prospects, skill development, and future trends in bioinformatics. His practical advice and real-world experiences inspired students to explore interdisciplinary research and career avenues in the field.

Overall, the guest lecture was highly informative and motivating, offering valuable insights into how statistical reasoning and bioinformatics can together drive innovation in biological research.

Earlier, Dr. L. Arul Professor and Head, Department of Plant Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics, TNAU, Coimbatore welcomed the gathering. Dr. N. Senthil Director, Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology and Centre for Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology delivered inaugural address. Finally, Dr. E. Kokiladevi, Professor and Head, Department of Plant Biotechnology, TNAU, Coimbatore proposed vote of thanks. Dr. K. Hemaprabha, Associate Professor, DPB and COXBIT team coordinated this event.
