In a quiet corner of Tamil Nadu, a village man’s humble mission is blooming into a green revolution. Social worker Mr. P. Thirumaran, hailing from Vengadampatty village in Tenkasi district, is on an extraordinary journey to create a greener planet through his ambitious “One Crore Seed Ball Mission.”
For the past three years, Mr. Thirumaran has dedicated his life, time, and resources to making and distributing seed balls — a simple yet powerful method of planting trees. His goal is to contribute one crore seed balls by 2027, supporting global efforts to combat climate change, capture carbon, and increase green cover.
Inspiring the Next Generation
What makes Thirumaran’s mission remarkable is his unwavering commitment to educating school children. Every day, he travels in his jeep — loaded with a variety of seeds, soil bags, and thousands of certificates — to schools across 19 southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
He interacts with students, demonstrating how to make seed balls and explaining the importance of trees in preserving the environment. His lively sessions not only inspire children but also empower them to act. After each workshop, every participating student receives a Certificate of Appreciation — a gesture that fuels their enthusiasm and sense of responsibility.
“Even if there are 5,000 students in a school, I ensure each one gets recognized,” says Thirumaran, smiling with the satisfaction of someone planting both trees and hope for the future.
A Growing Impact
So far, 50 lakh seed balls have been made and distributed under his guidance. With each seed ball containing five tree seeds, that translates to an astounding 2.5 crore tree seeds sown for the planet. The species include Neem, Tamarind, Teak, Papaya, Guava, Curry Leaf, Lemon, Ashoka, and Drumstick, among others — all chosen for their ecological value and suitability to local conditions.
A Role Model for Sustainable Living
Despite his simple lifestyle, Mr. Thirumaran stands tall as a role model for environmental responsibility. His mission has touched the lives of lakhs of students and teachers, spreading awareness about sustainability and inspiring communities to take part in reforestation efforts.
He is also known as a dedicated blood donor and shares a close bond with Superstar Rajinikanth’s family, who admire his selfless service.
