The Forest College and Research Institute (FCRI), Mettupalayam, in association with the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC) as part of ‘Vettri Nichayam’ under Naan Muthalvan Finishing School (NMFS) scheme, has inaugurated a 20-day Skill Development Training Programme on “Silkworm Rearing and Value Addition in Sericulture” at Oomapalayam, Karamadai block of Coimbatore on 30.11.2025 (Thursday).
The training programme aims to enhance the livelihood of unemployed rural youth by imparting technical know-how on various techniques associated silkworm rearing and value addition, and creating self-employment opportunities in Sericulture. The training modules comprise expert lectures, practical demonstrations, and exposure visits designed to inculcate hands-on skills and technical knowledge.
Delivering the Special Address, Thiru. Nihar Ranjan, IFS, Dean (Forestry), highlighted the vast scope and employment potential in Sericulture and allied sectors, emphasizing the need for youth engagement in this eco-friendly and profitable venture. Dean (Forestry) called upon the trainees to create the Wealth from the Waste by effectively utilizing the discarded cut cocoons
Dr. K.A. Murugesh, Professor and Head, Department of Sericulture, discussed the importance of mulberry-based value-added products and their growing relevance in the pharmaceutical and food industries. He urged the trainees to effectively utilize the training programme to substantially increase the family income by become a successful entrepreneur in Sericulture associated business avenue. Dr. I. Sekar, Professor and Head, Department of Forest Breeding and Tree Breeding, outlined the objectives and expected outcomes of the training programme.
A total of 26 unemployed rural youth are participating in the training, along with scientists from FCRI, who will facilitate the technical sessions and demonstrations throughout the 20-day programme. Dr.K. Parameswari, Associate Professor and Dr. P. Monhanraj, Teaching Assistant are coordinating the training programme.
