A special seminar to mark National Science Day was held at Tamil Nadu Polytechnic College here on Friday, presided by the Principal Dr. Thenmozhi.

Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Abdul Kadir, former Principal of Wakf Board College and president of the Breakthrough Science Society (Madurai chapter), spoke on the theme “Climate Crisis” and highlighted the growing impact of global warming.

He said that since the Industrial Revolution, increased emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides have led to a steady rise in global temperatures, disturbing ecological balance. Irregular monsoon patterns, severe droughts and drinking water scarcity are among the major consequences, he noted.

“When rainfall meant for three months occurs in a single day, followed by prolonged dry spells, it is not merely climate change but a climate crisis,” he said.

Referring to melting glaciers in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, Prof. Kadir warned that rising sea levels pose a serious threat to coastal nations. “If present trends continue, a time may come when people will have to carry oxygen cylinders, much like water bottles today,” he added.

Dr. Yogarajan, State Secretary of the Breakthrough Science Society, spoke on the lives and contributions of scientists such as Copernicus, C.V. Raman and Srinivasa Ramanujan. He also explained the significance of National Science Day, observed on February 28 to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect.

In her presidential address, Dr. Thenmozhi urged students to make optimal use of academic and scientific opportunities during their college years and develop skills required for the future.

Mrs. Hilda Mary, Secretary of the Society’s Madurai chapter, outlined its activities. Prof. Gayathri, former faculty of Thiagarajar College, and Prof. Selvarani of Meenakshi College delivered special lectures.

Students participated in an oratorical competition as part of the event. Prizes were distributed to the winners. The programme was organised by BSS executive committee member Bharathi and college staff. Over 120 students took part.
