Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is collaborating with the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, to strengthen international academic collaboration and create new global opportunities for students.

This partnership marks a significant step in IIT Madras’ global outreach strategy, particularly in creating scalable, flexible pathways for its large and growing student base. It also reflects a shared commitment by both institutions to democratize access to global education, strengthen research and academic exchange, and leverage digital platforms to reach learners worldwide.

The two institutions signed an MoU on Monday (30th March 2026) establishing a comprehensive framework for cooperation across degree programmes, online education, research, and academic exchange.

Highlighting the significance of the collaboration, Prof. Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses), IIT Madras, said, “This partnership reflects IIT Madras’ commitment to creating meaningful global pathways for our students. By combining the strength of our BS programmes with University of Canterbury’s advanced postgraduate offerings, we are enabling learners to seamlessly transition into international education that upholds our core values of academic rigor and modular flexibility.”

Looking forward to this collaboration, Prof. Michael Grimley, Dean, Future Learning and Development, University of Canterbury, said, “This collaboration marks an important step in deepening our engagement with India, combining our strengths in digital innovation, research, and industry-aligned education. Together, we are creating flexible, globally connected learning opportunities that will benefit students, academics, and partners across both institutions.”

A key feature is the structured Master’s pathway for students enrolled in IIT Madras’ BS programmes. Eligible students who meet academic requirements will be able to apply for postgraduate study at University of Canterbury. Selected candidates will complete their BS degree at IIT Madras and progress to Master of Applied Data Science programme at UC, creating a seamless international academic trajectory.

The MoU also facilitates student and faculty mobility between the two institutions and enables exchange programmes, joint research initiatives and co-teaching opportunities, besides academic engagement through conferences, seminars, and collaborative discussions.

Further, both institutions will explore expanding online and hybrid learning models. This includes offering courses through digital platforms such as SWAYAM, NPTEL, and NPTEL+, thereby increasing access to high-quality education for learners across geographies.

The Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE) at IIT Madras will serve as the nodal centre for coordinating initiatives under this partnership, including digital programmes and outreach activities.
