JCD Prabhakar Unanimously Elected as Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker

In a significant development in the newly constituted Tamil Nadu Assembly, TVK legislator JCD Prabhakar was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the House on Tuesday. Pro-Tem Speaker M. V. Karuppaiah announced the election after Chief Minister Joseph Vijay proposed Mr Prabhakar’s name, which was seconded by the party’s floor leader K. A. Sengottaiyan. TVK MLA RaviShankar from Thoraiyur constituency was also unanimously elected as the Deputy Speaker.


Addressing the Assembly after the election, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay stressed that all political parties, irrespective of their numerical strength, should be given equal opportunities to express their views in the House. He urged the Opposition to cooperate in ensuring healthy and constructive debates and assured that the government would work for the welfare of all sections of society.


Opposition leader and DMK MLA Udhayanidhi Stalin said Tamil Nadu should emerge as a model state in governance and public service. Several members also demanded live telecast of Assembly proceedings to ensure transparency.


Newly elected Speaker JCD Prabhakar assured members that the Chair would function impartially and strictly according to Assembly rules. He also announced plans to digitalise the Speaker’s office and promote a paperless work culture.


Meanwhile, the TVK government is set to face a floor test tomorrow to prove its majority in the Assembly.
