The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Coimbatore Branch Office, organized a Manak Manthan programme on 12 June 2026 at SEIMA Conference Hall, Race Course, Coimbatore, focusing on the draft Indian Standard CHD 19 (34122) WC – School Shoes for Boys and Girls.
The programme was conducted to facilitate stakeholder consultation and obtain valuable inputs from Manufacturers, Industry representatives, Testing laboratories, Educational institutions, Consumer organizations and other interested participants on the proposed draft standard for school shoes. The initiative forms part of BIS's ongoing efforts to ensure that Indian Standards are developed through a transparent and consensus-based process involving all concerned stakeholders.
In his address, Shri Ramesh K, Scientist-E/Director & Head, BIS Coimbatore highlighted the significance of the Quality Control Orders (QCOs) pertaining to footwear products and emphasized the need for a dedicated Indian Standard for school footwear to ensure Quality, Safety, Durability and Performance for products used by school children.
An overview of the activities and functions of BIS was presented by Shri Remyth Suresh, Scientist-D/Joint Director, BIS Coimbatore. He elaborated on the various services offered by BIS and guided participants on accessing information through the BIS website, including details related to Standards formulation, Standard proposals, Product certification, Laboratory testing and Consumer affairs. He emphasized the transparency of BIS processes and informed participants that the information is readily available for stakeholder reference and verification. He also highlighted the utility of the BIS Care App as a comprehensive platform for accessing BIS-related information, including verification of licences, Hallmarking and ISI-marked products, standards-related information and consumer grievance redressal mechanisms.
A detailed presentation on the draft standard CHD 19 (34122) WC – School Shoes for Boys and Girls was delivered by Shri Rino John S, Scientist-E/Director, BIS Coimbatore. The presentation covered the Technical requirements, Performance parameters, Testing provisions and Quality aspects envisaged in the draft standard, aimed at enhancing the quality and reliability of school footwear as an extensive Open House Discussion, during which participants actively shared their views, practical experiences, suggestions, and concerns regarding the draft standard. The deliberations facilitated a constructive exchange of ideas and valuable stakeholder feedback, which will contribute to the refinement and finalization of the proposed Indian Standard.
