Residents of Nikhilesan Nagar in Thoothukudi have submitted a petition to Mayor Jagan Periyasamy seeking immediate action to rectify drainage issues and complete pending road works in their locality.
The petition was presented at the Corporation Office by Gandhi Nagar Welfare Association President Anandasekar, Secretary Velmurugan, Treasurer Augustine, Councillor John, and resident representative Vinoth on behalf of the local residents.
According to the petition, the stormwater drainage channel constructed from Gandhi Nagar Park to Buckle Odai along the Nikhilesan Nagar Main Road in Ward No. 18 has not been properly designed. As a result, rainwater and wastewater accumulate and overflow onto the roads, particularly near the Third Main Street of Nikhilesan Nagar, before reaching Buckle Odai.
The residents stated that the primary cause of the problem is a culvert built opposite a house in the area, which has been constructed approximately one and a half feet higher than the required level. They pointed out that only by modifying and lowering this structure near the western side of the Second Main Street can water flow properly from north to south and prevent flooding.
The petitioners urged the Mayor to ensure that the issue is resolved before the onset of the monsoon season to avoid further inconvenience to residents.
The residents also highlighted that road-laying works have commenced following the completion of underground drainage projects in the locality. However, a portion of the continuation stretch of Nikhilesan Nagar Second Main Street has reportedly been left out of the project. They requested that this section also be included and paved along with the rest of the road network.
The petition concluded with an appeal to the Mayor and Corporation authorities to take necessary action at the earliest to improve drainage facilities and complete the pending road infrastructure works in the area.
