Osmania University has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first university in India to receive a comprehensive set of ISO certifications from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India, for its commitment to quality educational management, environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and food safety. The certifications were awarded following a rigorous assessment of the University's systems and processes across its academic and administrative units.
The certificates were presented to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kumar Molugaram, by Shri SK Kanojia, Deputy Director General (Southern Region), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), and Shri G. Venkat Narayan, Scientist-E, BIS, during a programme held at the University Senate Hall on Wednesday.
Osmania University received certification under the following international standards:
• IS/ISO 21001:2018 – Educational Organizations Management System
• IS/ISO 14001:2015 – Environmental Management System
• IS/ISO 50001:2018 – Energy Management System
• IS/ISO 22000:2018 – Food Safety Management System
The certifications cover the University, its constituent colleges, hostels and mess facilities, reflecting compliance with internationally recognized standards in educational quality, environmental responsibility, energy conservation and food safety.
Addressing the gathering, Shri SK Kanojia, Deputy Director General (Southern Region), BIS, congratulated Osmania University on achieving this unique distinction and described it as a significant milestone in the higher education sector. He said the University has demonstrated exemplary commitment towards implementing globally accepted management systems and fostering a culture of quality and continuous improvement.
He noted that the implementation of IS/ISO 21001:2018 reflects a strong learner-centric approach and commitment to educational excellence. The IS/ISO 14001:2015 certification highlights the University's efforts towards environmental sustainability, while IS/ISO 50001:2018 promotes efficient energy utilization and responsible resource management.
Referring to the IS/ISO 22000:2018 certification, Shri Kanojia appreciated the University's focus on ensuring safe, hygienic and quality food for students in hostel mess facilities. He observed that student welfare and public health are integral to institutional excellence and that the certification demonstrates the University's commitment to maintaining the highest standards of food safety.
Shri Kanojia emphasized that standards are powerful tools for improving institutional performance, enhancing stakeholder confidence and promoting sustainable growth. He stated that certification marks the beginning of a journey of continual improvement and expressed confidence that Osmania University would continue to set new benchmarks in higher education and institutional management.
He also congratulated Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kumar Molugaram, faculty members, administrative staff, hostel management teams and all stakeholders whose collective efforts contributed to securing the certifications.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kumar Molugaram described the recognition from the Bureau of Indian Standards as a matter of immense pride for the century-old Osmania University. He said the achievement reflects the University's unwavering commitment to excellence, transparency, accountability and student-centric governance.
Prof. Molugaram appreciated the dedicated efforts of the University administration, faculty members, officers, staff and all stakeholders whose collective contribution made this achievement possible. He stated that obtaining ISO certifications from BIS is a significant honour for an institution with a rich legacy of more than a century and demonstrates its commitment to adopting globally recognized standards in education and institutional management.
The Vice-Chancellor particularly highlighted that the University's newly renovated hostels have been awarded the IS/ISO 22000:2018 Food Safety Management System Certification, ensuring safe, hygienic and quality food services for students. He said the certification reflects the University's strong commitment to student welfare, health and well-being.
Prof. Molugaram reiterated that Osmania University is committed to providing international-standard education, academic infrastructure and student facilities. He noted that with the continued support of the Government, the University is undertaking several initiatives to strengthen and modernize campus infrastructure and enhance the overall learning environment for students.
He added that the ISO certifications would further strengthen quality systems across the University and motivate the institution to achieve higher benchmarks in teaching, research, administration and student services in the years ahead.
