A team of officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Hyderabad Branch Office, carried out a Search and Seizure operation at a jewellery shop in Warangal for violation of the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016 and the mandatory Hallmarking requirements notified by the Government of India.
The enforcement action was carried out under the directions of Shri P. V. Srikanth, Sc-E/Director & Head, BIS Hyderabad Branch Office. The raid was led by Shri K. Kavin, Sc-C/Deputy Director and Shri Vijayraj Barbar, Sc-C/Deputy Director, along with the BIS enforcement team.
During the raid, BIS officials found a large quantity of gold jewellery articles being offered for sale without mandatory BIS Hallmark, which is a violation of the provisions governing the sale of hallmarked gold jewellery under the BIS Act, 2016.
During the operation, around 7.875 kilograms of non-hallmarked gold jewellery, comprising necklace sets, rings, chains, earrings and other jewellery articles, valued at approximately ₹10 crore, was seized from the establishment. BIS has initiated further action against the concerned establishment under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri P. V. Srikanth, Sc-E/Director & Head, BIS Hyderabad Branch Office, stated that 13 districts in Telangana, including Warangal and Hanamkonda, fall under the mandatory Hallmarking regime. He urged all jewellers in these districts to sell only BIS Hallmarked gold jewellery bearing a genuine HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification Number) and strictly comply with the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.
He also appealed to consumers to purchase only BIS Hallmarked gold jewellery with HUID, download the BIS CARE App, verify the HUID before purchase, and insist on obtaining a proper invoice. In case of any misuse of Hallmarking or sale of jewellery without a genuine HUID, consumers may lodge complaints through the BIS CARE Mobile App.
BIS continues to undertake market surveillance and enforcement activities across the region to safeguard consumer interests, ensure compliance with statutory requirements, and promote quality and transparency in the jewellery sector.
Consumers are requested to look for the following components on genuinely hallmarked gold jewellery: BIS Hallmark Logo, Purity/Fineness Mark, Six-digit HUID Number.
The authenticity of the Hallmark can be verified through the BIS CARE Mobile App by entering the HUID number.
