A team of Officials from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Coimbatore Branch Office, carried out an Enforcement Search and Seizure Raid Operation on 21 July 2026 at Sree Vasavi Jewellers, No.161 Big Bazaar Street, Pookkulam, Trichy-620008 and M/s. Sree Selvithanga Maligai, No.156/1, Periyakadai Veethi, Trichy- 620008 Tiruchirappalli based on an information of suspected violation of BIS Act, 2016.
The operation was carried out by two teams comprising Shri Vinith kumar G (Team Leader), Scientist-E/Director, Shri Arivazhagan A, Scientist-D/Joint Director (Member), Shri Remyth Suresh M, Scientist-D/Joint Director (Member) and Shri Rino John S, Scientist-E/Director (Team Leader), Shri Simesh Kumar, Scientist-C/Deputy Director (Member). During the search conducted under the provisions of Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016.
4.9 Kg of gold jewellery worth approximately Rs.7.35 Crore, which did not bear the Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID) 6-digit alphanumeric number, were found and exhibited for sale. As gold jewellery must be hallmarked with HUID before being exhibited for sale, the items were seized.
As per Gazette Notification Order No.2481(E) dt 23rd June 2021 - Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts (Amendment) Order, 2022 Jewellery shops in Tiruchirappalli District shall not sell gold jewellery without Hallmarking.
In addition, as per Gazette Notification Order No. 1047(E) dated March 3, 2023—Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts (Amendment) Order, 2023—no jeweller shall sell gold jewellery without a valid HUID mark, unique to each piece, after March 31, 2023.
Shri. Ramesh K, Scientist-E/ Director and Head of Coimbatore Branch Office stated that action would be initiated by Bureau of Indian Standards, Coimbatore Branch Office against the offender under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. The offence is punishable with imprisonment up to one year or a fine not less than Rs. 1,00,000/- but may extend up to five times the value of goods or articles produced or sold or offered to be sold or affixed or applied with a Standard Mark or both as per Section 29 of BIS Act, 2016.
General public are, therefore requested that in case they come across such instances of Misuse of Hallmark i.e. without HUID, the same may be intimated to BIS Coimbatore Branch Office, 3rd Floor, BSNL DTax Building, Race Course, Coimbatore – 641 018.
