Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tenkasi District President Ananthan Ayyasamy met the Tenkasi District Collector on Monday and submitted two key petitions concerning the livelihood of traditional brick kiln workers and the restoration of the Veppankulam irrigation tank. He also held discussions on the long-pending restoration of the Senbagavalli Dam.
In his first petition, Ananthan Ayyasamy urged the district administration to take immediate steps to protect the livelihood of more than 1,300 families dependent on around 30 traditional brick kilns operating in the Kandigaiperi area of Sankarankovil taluk. He requested the authorities to grant a reasonable timeframe for kiln owners to comply with environmental and statutory regulations and to avoid abrupt measures such as disconnecting electricity supply, which could severely affect the workers' livelihood. He called for a practical and balanced solution that safeguards both legal compliance and employment.
In the second petition, he stated that farmers from Thenku Sathiram village were willing to desilt and strengthen the bund of the Veppankulam tank at their own expense. Since the tank belongs to the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam, he requested the district administration to grant the necessary permission for the restoration work. He noted that the project would significantly improve irrigation facilities and groundwater recharge in the surrounding areas.
Ananthan Ayyasamy also discussed the restoration of the Senbagavalli Dam, a long-standing demand of farmers in Tenkasi and neighbouring districts. The District Collector informed him that the issue had recently been brought to the attention of the Chief Minister during the District Collectors' Conference and is currently under the State Government's consideration.
Speaking after the meeting, Ananthan Ayyasamy said that when people voluntarily come forward to undertake public welfare works using their own resources and labour, the government should extend its full support. He thanked the District Collector for the constructive discussion and expressed confidence that the administration would take favourable action on all the petitions at the earliest.
