The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office officials conducted an Enforcement Search and Seizure operation on October 22, 2026, at a mobile hardware outlet named M/s A1-Combo King in Velachery, Chennai, for alleged misuse of the BIS Standard Mark without valid authorisation and violation of the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. The operation was carried out under Section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016.

During the search and seizure operation, BIS officials found lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries bearing BIS Standard Marks with registration numbers that were either invalid or not authorized for the brand under which the products were being marketed. The registration numbers displayed on the goods were found to be associated with other brands, thereby indicating misuse of the BIS Standard Mark (Registration).

Approximately 300 lithium-ion batteries bearing the BIS Standard Mark with fake registration numbers were seized during the operation. These products fall under Indian Standard IS 16046 (Part 2):2018 / IEC 62133-2:2017 and are covered under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order notified by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under Section 16 of the BIS Act, 2016. Under this Quality Control / Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), compliance is mandatory, and a valid BIS registration is required specifically for the product and brand concerned. The use of a registration number granted for another brand on products marketed under a different brand is strictly prohibited and constitutes a statutory violation under the BIS Act.

Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist-F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, stated that BIS undertakes enforcement and market-surveillance activities to prevent the misuse of the BIS Standard Mark and to protect consumers from misleading product markings. He emphasised that consumers should remain vigilant while purchasing electronic products and batteries, and should not rely solely on the presence of a Standard Mark or registration number on the product or its packaging. Consumers must verify through BIS Care App that the BIS registration is valid and corresponds to the actual product and brand being purchased. He further stated that BIS would continue taking appropriate action against violations of the BIS Act, 2016, to ensure compliance with applicable standards and safeguard consumer interests.

BIS will initiate further action against the violator in accordance with the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and other applicable requirements. The offence is punishable with imprisonment up to two years or a fine not less than ₹2,00,000, which may extend up to ten times the value of the goods, or both, under Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016 depending upon the nature of the offence committed.

Consumers are advised to verify the authenticity of the BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark) and the registration details of products covered under mandatory certification before purchasing them. For products covered under the Compulsory Registration Scheme, consumers should verify the registration number and ensure that it corresponds to the product and brand concerned. Such verification may be carried out through the BIS Care App or the official BIS website, www.bis.gov.in, and the e-BIS portal, manakonline.in. Consumers may report suspected misuse of the BIS Standard Mark or sale of products without the requisite certification through the BIS Care App or by contacting the BIS Chennai Branch Office at cnbo@bis.gov.in.
