A 12-year-old demand from residents and farmers of Kondanur village to desilt the check dam located at Anaikatti–Kondanur village in Veerapandi panchayat, Periyanaickenpalayam Union, under the Kavundampalayam Assembly constituency, has now been addressed.
The check dam, located in Survey No. 723 at Kondanur village, serves as an important water source for more than 200 farmers and residents in the area.
As regular maintenance and desilting works had not been carried out for the past 12 years, large quantities of silt had accumulated in the check dam, reducing its water storage capacity. As a result, the structure was unable to store adequate rainwater, affecting water availability for agriculture, livestock and wildlife.
Following repeated requests from farmers and residents, Kavundampalayam MLA Kanimozhi Santhosh has taken steps to desilt the check dam and restore its water storage capacity.
The desilting work is expected to enable better storage of rainwater during the monsoon and help increase the groundwater level in the surrounding areas. It is also expected to improve water availability for farmers as well as livestock and wildlife.
Farmers and residents of Kondanur have expressed their gratitude to MLA Kanimozhi Santhosh for taking action on their long-pending demand.
