In a first in Delta Region, Meenakshi Hospital, Thanjavur which is the leading multispeciality hospital in Delta region of Tamil Nadu performed a spine surgery on a 15 year old boy to bring him back to feet who was diagnosed with Kyphoscoliosis and was on wheelchair.
Speaking about the patient details Dr. Parthiban, Senior Consultant - Orthopaedics & Trauma said that the 15-year-old child reported to our spine surgery clinic with a history of weakness in both lower limbs and aberrant stiffness in leg muscles. Due to this issue, he had to use a wheelchair and spent close to three months depending on his family to help move him. He had a disorder called "Kyphoscoliosis" in which the growing of his spine bones caused a curvature that was progressively worsening, and as a result, the functioning of the spinal cord deteriorated.
Commenting on the critical surgical procedure Dr. Karthikeyan, Senior Consultant - Spine Surgery said this procedure is one that will be remembered for a lifetime for the doctors at Meenakshi Hospital, Thanjavur. He added we used Intra-operative neuromonitoring technology to monitor the spinal cord function during surgery. Following surgery, the child showed significant improvement in the strength of his lower limbs. He is able to walk unaided in three weeks. The fact that he is "Back to feet from a wheelchair" makes him tremendously happy. It demonstrates how spinal operations can permanently alter a person's life.
