BIS officials raids jeweller selling jewellery with fake Hallmarking

A team of Officials from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office, carried out an Enforcement Search and Seizure Raid operation on 12 March 2024 at retail jeweller shop outlet namely, M/s Rahul Gold House, No 3/33, OMR Road, Kelambakkam, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu 603103, based on an information of suspected violation of BIS Act, 2016.


During the operation conducted by a team of BIS Officials constituting Shri. D. Jeevanandam, Scientist – D / Joint Director, Shri. Dhinesh Rajagopalan L, Scientist-C / Deputy Director and staff members, in pursuance of Section 28 of BIS Act 2016, 262 numbers of jewellery (16 Bangles, 25 Chains, 4 pairs of Ear rings, 217 numbers of rings) weighing 1.173 Kg with fake Hallmarking (ie) without Hallmarking Unique Identification ID (HUID) were found and exhibited for sale. Those jewelleries were seized, since gold jewellery are required to be hallmarked along with HUID before display for sale.


Consumers are requested to look for the following components for a genuinely hallmarked gold ornaments


Further , the authenticity of Hallmarking can be verified in BIS Care Mobile App by feeding HUID number.


Head of Chennai Branch Office Smt. G. Bhavani stated that action would be initiated by Bureau of Indian Standards, Southern Regional Office, Chennai Branch Office against the offender under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.  The offence is punishable with imprisonment up to one year or a fine not less than Rs. 1,00,000/- but may extend up to five times the value of goods or articles produced or sold or offered to be sold or affixed or applied with a Standard Mark or both as per Section 29 of BIS Act, 2016.


General public are, therefore requested that in case they come across such instances of Misuse of Hallmark (ie) without HUID, the same may be intimated to BIS Chennai Branch Office, CIT Campus, 4th Cross Road, Taramani, Chennai-600113.  Such complaints can also be made by using the BIS Care Mobile App or by sending an E-Mail to hcnbo1@bis.gov.in.
