Training programme on BIS Certification for Importers and Exporters in Chennai

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Chennai Branch Office in coordination with Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has organised a training programme on BIS Certification for Importers and Exporters at Hotel Vestin Park, Chennai on 24 May 2024.


Shri K. Unnikrishnan, Joint Director General and Southern Regional Head, FIEO welcomed the dignitaries and participants. He emphasized the growth of the Indian economy due to imports and exports and stressed the importance of having regulations to prevent the import of substandard products into the country.


Smt. G. Bhavani, Head/Director at the Bureau of Indian Standards, Chennai Branch Office, highlighted the program objectives. She mentioned that India, being a highly populated country, is a significant marketplace. She also noted that the implementation of mandatory BIS certification through Quality Control Orders has significantly reduced the dumping of substandard products by foreign manufacturers into the country.


Shri B.J. Gowththam, Joint Director at BIS, provided a technical presentation detailing various Quality Control Orders, the procedure for applying for a BIS license, and product manuals.


Earlier, Shri Dhinesh Rajagopalan L, Deputy Director at BIS, explained the activities of BIS and the latest initiatives, including the e-BIS and BIS Care App. Ms Selvanayagi, Joint Director, FIEO thanked BIS for their efforts in conducting this meeting. Around 55 participants from across Tamilnadu, Andra Pradesh have attended the meeting.


Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body of India is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection.
