All the students, even those belonging to other states, came decked in the traditional onam costumes like kasavu sarees, Set Sarees, Mundu etc. The demon king Mahabali, played by a staff, graced the occasion with his presence. The King came walking from the AVIT entrance, cheered by the students with Chenda Melam, the special Kerala religious musical instruments playing folk beats of Kerala.
Subsequently, King Mahabali, the staff members and students were welcomed by Dr. Jennifer G Joseph, Coordinator of the Fine Arts Club, Head, H and S department at the portico of AVIT where the remaining celebrations continued. Dr. G. Selva Kumar, the Principal, addressed the gathering and wished everyone a prosperous Onam. On this occasion, Dr. S.P. Sangeetha, Vice Principal – Academics shared her Onam wishes with the students of AVIT and Dr. L. Prabu, Vice Principal, Administration also wished the students. During this time it was recalled how AVIT and VMRF reached out and contributed to the CM fund of Kerala for the Wayanad disaster which had hugely affected the hearts of faculty and students alike.
Later, there was a lighting of Kuthuvilakku by the Principal, staff members and students. A poo Kolam Competition was also arranged and many teams created beautiful vibrant and captivating poo kolams. Vadamvali (Tug of War) a popular entertainment sport performed during Onam celebrations in Kerala where the strength of two groups is tested, was also witnessed at AVIT. As part of the traditional Onam celebration, a Tug of War game was arranged for the students and faculty, who went on to participate actively.
During the competition, teams consisting of 8 members each participated. Separate rounds of Vadamvali for men faculty members, women faculty members, I year students (boys and girls) and senior students happened with the huge crowd cheering everyone. The Onam festivities came to a halt with the electrifying performance by the Chenda Melam troupe.
