The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India, organized the Manak Mahotsav – World Standards Day Stakeholders Programme yesterday in collaboration with its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) institutions, Sri Sai Ram Engineering College and the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR), Chennai.
This event was held at the campus of Sri Sai Ram Engineering College, was part of the celebrations for World Standards Day, themed "Shared Vision for a Better World: SDG 9 Achieving Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure through AI."
Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, Director General of BIS was the Chief Guest of the Programme and delivered the Special Address. Shri Praveen Khanna, Deputy Director General (Southern Region), Smt. Nishat Sultana Haque, Deputy Director General (Laboratories) and Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Head-Southern Regional Laboratory were present on the Occasion and delivered their speech.
The program featured technical sessions led by technical speakers, who shared valuable insights on standards, innovation, and the pivotal role of artificial intelligence in achieving sustainable development goals.
Various Stakeholders comprising students, educators, and industry professionals, engaged actively, gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of quality and standards in today’s rapidly evolving landscape. During the discussions the audience were informed about Quality Control Orders (QCOs), regulatory measures introduced by the government to ensure mandatory certification for specific products or product categories. These orders are designed to ensure that products meet certain prescribed quality, safety, and performance requirements before they can be manufactured, imported, stored, or sold in the country issued by the Government of India in the interest of consumer safety. They were informed that QCOs are issued for various product categories including iron & steel, cement, footwear, chemicals, wheels, tires, toys etc.
The Manak Mahotsav Programme underscored the vital role of collaboration between educational institutions and BIS in nurturing a quality-driven mindset among the younger generation. The engagement of various stakeholders highlighted the importance of a collective approach towards achieving industry innovation and infrastructure development through the lens of standards.
