World Standards Day (WSD) Conclave conducted by BIS at Tirunelveli

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), as the National Standards Body of India, has been at the forefront of establishing and promoting standards across various sectors, ensuring quality and safety for both consumers and industries. BIS, Madurai celebrates World Standards Day every year on 14 October, to recognize the efforts made by the professionals for their voluntary contribution in formulating standards at National and International level. It serves as a platform to reflect on the impact of standardization across industries and how it fosters innovation, builds trust, and ensures quality in products and services.


As part of the World Standards Day (WSD) celebrations for the year 2024, BIS, Madurai conducted a Stakeholders Conclave on 3rd October 2024 at Hotel Sree Annamalaiyar Park, Tirunelveli. 160 participants from various sectors, including Manufacturers, Laboratories, Government Departments, Academic Institutions including college students, Industrial associations were engaged in the discussions about the Role of Standards in fostering industrial growth and public welfare.


Shri S. D. Dayanand, Senior Director and Head, BIS, Madurai presented the welcome address and program objectives. He explained about the importance of Standardization and Quality in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.


Shri K.P.Karthikeyan, I.A.S District Collector Tirunelveli inaugurated the conclave and delivered the  inaugural speech. He explained importance of Indian Standards in achieving a competitive edge to the products in the global platform. He  also informed Tirunelveli’s contribution in nation level and informed Tirunelveli is ranked 4th in Tamil Nadu in production. Tirunelveli is manufacturing several important products & Thoothukudi is also competing closely, like solar products, electrical vehicle parts, etc. He invited entrepreneurs & young budding entrepreneurs to take up standardization while manufacturing products.


Dr. N.O. Sukhaputhra, I.A.S, Commissioner, Tirunelveli City Municipal Corporation presented the keynote address and informed about the role to bring efficiencies and constantly drive sustainability. He informed that the manufactures should utilize BIS standards while procuring raw materials and manufacturing their products.


The program covered a wide range of topics, including the core activities of BIS, features of the BIS Care App, the roles and responsibility of BIS in the manufacture of quality products, ISI Mark & Hallmark (Gold Jewellery), the procedures for applying for new application, renewal, inclusion through manakonline portal were covered.


A detailed presentation on Solid Waste Management was delivered by Smt. Hemalatha P Panicker, Joint Director, BIS Madurai as part of discussion on Indian Standards. The importance of Solid Waste Management is one of the  key process in sustainable production.


After the presentation, a detailed open house discussion was held and several queries regarding the application procedures, requirements and testing methods regarding the Indian Standards were clarified.
