The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Hyderabad Branch Office organized a sensitization programme for the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) on November 20, 2024. The session was conducted both online and offline, offering a comprehensive overview of BIS and its significant role in standardization and quality control in construction and infrastructure projects.
The event was attended by various participants, including senior officials from CPWD, who were keen to understand the latest developments and guidelines under BIS. The Chief Engineer of CPWD, Shri A.K. Khatua, was also present and provided valuable insights into the importance of such programmes. In his address, Shri Khatua emphasized the need for better awareness and adherence to national standards in public infrastructure projects to ensure quality and safety.
The highlight of the programme was the presentation by Smt. T. Sujatha, Joint Director and Scientist-D at BIS Hyderabad. She gave an enlightening orientation on BIS, explaining its role in ensuring standardization across various sectors. Her session covered essential topics, including the BIS Care App, a tool designed to enhance public accessibility to BIS services and information, as well as an in-depth discussion on the National Building Code and the National Electrical Code. Smt. Sujatha’s presentation was well-received by the participants, offering them valuable knowledge to help improve the quality of CPWD’s projects.
Additionally, Smt. Sujatha explained how CPWD officials can become technical members of BIS, contributing to the development and review of standards. She also highlighted department-wise standards available for download from the BIS website, encouraging participants to familiarize themselves with relevant codes. Furthermore, she introduced the Capacity Building Programme organized by NITS, outlining how CPWD officials can take advantage of these opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge.
The sensitization programme aimed to foster better understanding and implementation of BIS standards among CPWD officials, enhancing the quality of construction and electrical works in line with national norms.
