Felis Films today announced the release of the documentary film, Nilgiris - A Shared Wilderness, to celebrate the story of India’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – the Nilgiris. Produced by Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies, this film was created as an educational project to foster awareness about the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve and its enduring relationship with both people and nature.
The release of the film in Chennai on November 4, 2024, is timed to coincide with the International Day for Biosphere Reserves, highlighting the global significance of biospheres and honoring the communities and Forest Departments that work tirelessly to sustain the Nilgiris. Any proceeds from distribution will be reinvested into further conservation education, ensuring that the film’s impact supports ongoing efforts to protect these landscapes.
Speaking about the film, Rohini Nilekani, Chairperson of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies and the Executive Producer of the film said, “With this film - 'Nilgiris—A Shared Wilderness', we hope to awaken people to the incredible beauty and biodiversity of this ancient and unique biosphere - the largest protected forest area in the country, now undergoing rapid change driven by human activity. If we wish to continue to conserve it, samaaj, sarkaar and bazaar will have to work in unison to nurture this ecosystem. The documentary is a call to action for everyone who feels connected to these sacred landscapes.”
Sandesh Kadur, Director and Cinematographer of the film said, “This is the story of a new wilderness, a mostly human-made landscape, where wildlife continues to adapt and thrive. Where else in the world can you have black leopards, gaur, sloth bear, etc."
