The Department of Zoology and Research Centre, Lady Doak College, Madurai organized HANDS-ON WORKSHOP ON ‘ALTERNATE ANIMAL MODELS FOR BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH’ on 28th and 29th November 2024. About 50 participants including faculty, post graduate students and research scholars of life science departments attended the program.
Dr. K. Sujatha and Dr. A. Mahalakshmi, Assistant Professors, served as the organizing secretary for the program. Dr. Priyatharsini Rajendran, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Zoology, welcomed the gathering. Dr. R. Beulah Jeyashree, Principal and Secretary, Lady Doak College delivered the introductory remarks. Dr. K. Balamurugan, Senior Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology, Alagappa University, Karaikudi, delivered a lecture and a hands-on session on C. elegans as an effective alternate model for studying host-pathogen interactions.
Use of Zebra fish as an alternate model in biological research was dealt by Dr. S. Achiraman, Professor, Department of Environmental studies, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, and his scholars. Dr. M. Rajalakshmi, Aassistant Professor, Holy Cross College, Tiruchirappalli, explained and demonstrated the importance of In-Silico methodologies as an effective substitute for animal models. The hands-on sessions helped the participants to understand the theoretical concepts.
