78th BIS Foundation Day Marked with Standards Carnival in Madurai

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Madurai celebrated its 78th Foundation Day with a vibrant carnival at Mangayarkarasi College of Arts and Science for Women, Paravai, Madurai. The event brought together 2000 students, 200 teachers, more than 100 parents and BIS officials to raise awareness about product quality, certification, and the role of importance of Quality and Standardization in Consumer Goods used in our day-to-day life.


The Carnival began with presentation of welcome address and program objectives by Shri S. D. Dayanand, Senior Director and Head, BIS Madurai. Smt. V. Indirani Ponvasanth, Mayor of Madurai, gave the inaugural speech, highlighting the pivotal role of BIS in fostering consumer confidence through certified products. Shri C. Dinesh Kumar IAS, Corporation Commissioner of Madurai, also addressed the audience as the esteemed guest of honor. In his speech, He emphasized the importance of quality standards in driving sustainable development and ensuring the safety of consumers. He praised BIS for its tireless efforts in promoting reliable and safe products across industries.


Dr. P. Ashok Kumar, Chairman & Secretary of Mangayarkarasi Group of Institutions, gave the keynote address, emphasizing BIS's role in promoting industry growth and consumer safety. Er. A. Shakti Pranesh, Vice Chairman, Mangayarkarasi Group, highlighted the significance of quality certifications and encouraged students to advocate for BIS standards. Shri A. Arivazhagan, Joint Director, BIS, gave a presentation on quality in consumer goods and demonstrated the use of BIS Care app explaining its latest features.


The event featured 15 stalls displaying BIS-certified products and a science exhibition showcasing innovative Science models by students. Students participated in competitions like Quiz, Poster designing, Reel making and meme creation, engaging in fun activities while learning about the importance of quality standards. The parents of the students also enthusiastically participated in competitions and fun games and inspired their children.


Cultural performances by students in the form of Dance, Songs and Skits raised awareness on the importance of purchasing ISI marked products and Hallmarked gold jewellery. The event was broadcasted live by All India Radio, extending its reach. Cash prizes and certificates were rewarded to the winners of competitions.


The event concluded with a valedictory address by Dr. Uma Baskar, Principal of Mangayarkarasi College of Arts and Science for Women, who thanked all participants for making the event a success. Smt. Hemalatha P. Panicker, Joint Director of BIS, Madurai, delivered the vote of thanks.
