The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) celebrated its Foundation Day on January 6th 2025 marking the establishment of a pivotal institution committed to promoting and maintaining standards across industries in India. Established in 1987 by an Act of Parliament, BIS succeeded the Indian Standards Institution (ISI), which was formed in 1947. Over the years, BIS has evolved to meet the dynamic needs of industries and consumers, fostering innovation and sustainability while adhering to global best practices.
On the Eve of BIS Foundation Day, BIS organized a Day Long Meeting with Industries on 06 January 2025, at Tamilnadu Open University Academic Block Auditorium, in Chennai.
This event promises to be a remarkable occasion where BIS had discussions with Industries, and Industry Associations regarding future of Standardization in India, Digital Solutions, Conformity Assessment for robust quality culture.
Smt. G. Bhavani, Scientist-F/ Sr. Director & Head of the Chennai Branch Office welcomed the Participants and informed about the History of BIS, How ISI Mark and Hallmark and CRS marks were brought out by BIS. She also said BIS is for the industry and supported by the industry.
Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Scientist-G & Deputy Director General (Southern Region) of BIS delivered the Key Note Address. During her speech, Smt. Meenakshi Ganesan appreciated the officials of BIS for their involvement and sincerity shown in their work over the years. She also appreciated the Organizations, Industry who had contributed in creation of Standards at World Class. She mentioned that with the contribution of Industry, Common Consumers, Educational Institutions and other Stakeholders BIS have reached this level.
Mr. L. Nirmal Raj, I.A.S., – Industries Commissioner and Director of Industries and Commerce; Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Department, Government of Tamilnadu was the Chief Guest of the Programme. During his address, he congratulated BIS for celebrating 78 years of Service to the Nation. He also spoke about the issues relating to Policies such as Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, European union deforestation regulation and how Industries should be prepared in facing such mechanisms and tackling these issues.
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India working under the aegis of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Government of India. The principal activities of BIS include Standards Formulation, Conformity Assessment, Management Systems and Certification of Hallmarking of Gold & Silver and quality related matters extending its services to industry, trade, commerce and common Consumers. The BIS Act 2016 mandates us to formulate and promote these standards across the country.
