IMU and IHM Chennai Forge Partnership to Boost Cruise Tourism and Hospitality Training

The Indian Maritime University (IMU) and the Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition (IHM Chennai) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote skill development and training for crew and hospitality services on board the cruise ships. The agreement marks a significant step towards creating a skilled workforce to meet the growing demand for trained manpower in the national and international cruise industry.


This partnership aims to provide youth with training under the Cruise India Mission launched by the Hon’ble Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal in Sep 2024. This mission endeavours to promote career opportunities in both the hospitality and maritime sectors. Through this MoU, the two institutions will collaborate on various initiatives, including offering short-term courses, awareness programs, and hands-on training for students interested in pursuing careers on board the cruise ships.


Key Highlights of the Partnership:


IMU will offer certification programs on the Merchant Navy and Passenger/Cruise Ships, including STCW safety training, Passenger Ship Familiarization, and DGS-approved certifications.


IHM Chennai will provide specialized training in soft skills, dining etiquette, food safety, housekeeping practices, and more.


Providing courses and support required for the interested students of IHM to make them Cruise industry ready


Awareness programs for both IHM Chennai and IMU students to explore job opportunities and career growth in the cruise and hospitality industries.


Organizing visits to maritime ports and ships for hands-on experience.


Impact on the Industry: This collaboration will not only address the future demands for skilled professionals in cruise tourism but also support the larger goal of enhancing India’s maritime sector. By leveraging the expertise of both institutions, the partnership is poised to contribute to the growth of cruise tourism and related hospitality services in India towards the furtherance of the Hon’ble Prime Minister's initiative of “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.


The MoU was signed by Shri K Saravanan Registrar IMU and Ms. Smt. R. Parimala, Principal & Secretary, IHM, Chennai, in the presence of Dr. Malini V Shankar Vice Chancellor IMU and Dr. B. CHANDRAMOHAN, I.A.S Principal Secretary, Dept. of Tourism, Culture & Religious Endowments, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Dr. Rajoo Balaji Pro Vice-Chancellor IMU, R. Adm Dr. PJ Rangachari (retd) IN Director IMU Chennai Campus, Capt Ganesan Velayutham Associate Professor & HoD School of Nautical Science, and other officials of IMU and IHM.
