Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body of India is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. As the National Standards Body of India, BIS plays a pivotal role in ensuring quality, safety, and reliability across industries. Through stringent certification, regulatory frameworks, and consumer awareness initiatives, BIS safeguards public interest while fostering industrial excellence. The ISI mark, a hallmark of compliance, is instrumental in promoting safer, superior products, particularly in critical sectors like road safety.
In alignment with BIS mission, Bureau of Indian Standards, in collaboration with Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Chennai , organized a BIS-VIT Fest on 11th March 2025 in observance of World Consumer Rights Day at VIT Campus, Chennai.
The Fest Started off with a Road Show to raise awareness among consumers regarding various initiatives of BIS in consumer protection, an event highlighting the life-saving significance of ISI-certified road safety products such as helmets, automotive glass, and tyres. The Road Show was inaugurated by Thiru. S. Dhandavamoorthy, Chief Traffic Warden (I/C), Tambaram Commissionerate and in his address appreciated the efforts taken by BIS in consumer awareness on Safety & Health and usage of Quality Helmets. During the show, Free ISI Certified Helmets were distributed to the riders travelling without Helmets. Smt G Bhavani, Senior Director & Head (Chennai Branch-BIS) informed the riders about importance of safety and importance of ISI Marked Products.
This was followed by the dignitaries unveiling the Interactive Industry Stalls from leading industry players like ASAHI INDIA GLASS LTD, UNO MINDA ALUMINUM COMPANY PRIVATE LIMITED, WHEELS INDIA LIMITED, SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC INDIA PVT LTD, MICHELIN INDIA PRIVATE LIMITE, MASTERPAGE (KREEDA GAMES), APPASAMY ASSOCIATES PRIVATE LIMITED, TPRS GLASS, E-MOX MANUFACTURING PRIVATE LIMITED & VEVA TOYS who had put up stalls in the campus which were visited by students at large.
Various competitions and engaging activities by the students of VIT Chennai were also conducted to reinforce the importance of quality and compliance.
The Valedictory Function had S S Balaji, Hon’ble Member of Legislative Assembly, Thiruporur Constituency, Government of Tamilnadu as the Chief Guest and he delivered the Presidential Address. During his address he informed that that there are two ways of ensuring quality one is precautionary (by the manufacture) and the second one is Remedial (by the consumer). He also spoke on Standard and Quality and informed that every consumer has a right to identify whether the ISI Mark on a product is Genuine. He also encouraged the students to take part in BIS National Quiz.
From BIS, Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Scientist G and Head, Southern Regional Laboratory in her speech informed various Rights to Consumers and enlightened the audience on This year Consumer Rights day theme.
Smt. G Bhavani, Scientist F/ Sr.Director & Head, Chennai while explaining the programme objectives appreciated the efforts put up by VIT in conducting the VIT Fest in a short notice. She also informed the participants on the objective behind creation of Standards clubs, Exposure Visits and Signing of MoUs with Educational Institutes.
Dr. Thiyagarajan, Pro VC, VIT Chennai & Dr. P.K.Manoharan, Additional Registrar, VIT Chennai ; Dr. Ravi Shankar, Dean SENSE from VIT-Chennai were also present during the function.
The winners of the competitions were be distributed the Prizes.
