Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched new programmes to prepare students for the latest advances in technology and become leaders in Industry and academia. These courses have been launched at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

It may also be recalled IIT Madras became the First Institute in the country to announce separate admission categories for those excelling in Sports and Fine Arts.

The Institute introduced Fine Arts and Culture Excellence’ (FACE) Admission to Undergraduate Programs from the Academic year 2025 - 26. The objective is to reward and encourage students who have achieved excellence in fine arts and culture.

The admission process through FACE would not be through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal but on a separate portal (https://ugadmissions.iitm.ac.in/face/)

The ‘Sports Excellence Admission’ (SEA) was introduced from the last academic year of 2024-2025. This initiative is to recognize and reward talented students who have excelled in sports. This program encourages deserving students to pursue higher education while continuing to excel in their sports.

Under both these initiatives, two seats per program will be allotted in all B.Tech. and B.S. programs of IIT Madras. Of the two seats in each program, one seat will be female-only, and the other will be gender-neutral.

Welcoming students from all over the country to apply for these Programmes, Prof. Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses), IIT Madras, “These new courses have been introduced keeping in mind the needs of both industry as well as academia and the aspirations of students.”

The New Programmes launched this year are:

1.    B.S. (Chemistry) - Admission will be through the IISER Aptitude Test

2.    M.Tech. in Electric Vehicles - Admission will be through GATE

3.    Two new B.Tech. Programmes in the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering - Admission for both Programmes will be through JEE

-       B.Tech. in Computational Engineering and Mechanics (CEM)

-       B.Tech. in Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering (iBME)

B.S. (CHEMISTRY):

The B.S.(Chemistry) is a 4-year undergraduate programme with an upgrade option to M.S. in Chemistry. It is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in Chemistry and allied science subjects, blending theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory experience to prepare them for careers in research, industry, and academia. Also, the curriculum offers a large number of choice-based learning opportunities, ensuring an enjoyable learning experience at IIT Madras Campus.

The B.S. (Chemistry) at IIT Madras offers the following unique features:

Opportunity to avail a minor degree along with B.S. or M.S. (eg: B.S. Chemistry with Data Science)

Carry out project work in allied science and engineering departments of the Institute

Opportunity to collaborate with other universities and Institutes during MS project

Well-equipped teaching and research laboratories

M.TECH. IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES:

This M.Tech. will prepare the graduates for leadership roles in solving complex real-world challenges both in academia and the automotive industry

The transportation sector is undergoing a paradigm transition towards a Sustainable future, for which E-Mobility is an important enabler. While the initial ‘re-birth’ of Electric Vehicles (EVs) has been driven by cars, there is a rapid electrification of 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, and commercial vehicles. To ensure a good quantity and quality of well-trained manpower to drive this transition, it is imperative to train the students in this field and get familiar with the latest technologies in the EV industry

This new M.Tech. Programme is multidisciplinary as well as industry-focused. It is designed with salient features of an interdisciplinary curriculum, industry-aligned courses, hands-on laboratory work, internships with industry interaction, and research and innovation focus on subsystems of electric vehicles.

B.TECH. IN COMPUTATIONAL ENGINEERING AND MECHANICS (CEM)

This unique Programme will prepare students for future digital engineering careers, in which physical systems converge with computational and Artificial Intelligence. It blends a learning of classical engineering knowledge with modern computational tools and will position graduates to address tomorrow’s complex, real-world engineering challenges.

B.TECH. IN INSTRUMENTATION AND BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING (IBME)

Graduates of this Programme will be able to design clinically regulated, ethically sensitive solutions that address global healthcare challenges. The Programme prepares graduates for leadership as well as entrepreneurship roles in the medical device industry, rehabilitation technologies, and AI-driven healthcare systems, while fostering innovation in diagnostics and therapeutics.

Both Programmes offer students the opportunity to upgrade to the five-year Dual Degree (B.Tech. + M.Tech.) through Interdisciplinary Dual Degree (IDDD) Programmes, three of which - Computational Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Complex Systems and Dynamics - are coordinated by the faculty of the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering.
