MMM Eye Care Centre has officially opened its doors in Madurai, bringing with it a pioneering model of accessible and affordable eye care. In a first in South Tamil Nadu, the centre offers home visits and medical camps, equipped with advanced fundus cameras for on-site screening of diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

As part of its inauguration, MMM Eye Care will be offering free eye consultations for people of all ages and with various vision health issues until July 31, 2025. Residents of Madurai and nearby areas can avail home visits and free eye consultations by calling 82485 64103.

Honourable Justice Mr. Krishnan Ramaswamy, Judge, Madras High Court inaugurated the hospital, in the presence of Guests of Honour: Honourable Dr. B. Ramaswamy, Legal Advisor, Government of India; Mr. B. Annadurai Shree, Chairman, Anna College of Optometry, Madurai & Virudhunagar; Dr. S. Bernard Albert Rajkumar, Director & CEO, and Dr. A. Packia Sakaya Mercy, MD, Consultant Retina.

The event also marked the announcement of a partnership between MMM Eye Care and Anna College of Optometry, aimed at enabling graduating students to establish optometric clinics, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.

In his comments, Dr. S. Bernard Albert Rajkumar, said, “We are pleased to formally launch our hospital in Madurai. Our operations are based on a unique model that focuses on home visits and community outreach programs to provide advanced eye screening. Our mission is to reduce the risk of preventable vision loss caused by conditions like diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, both of which are rising at an alarming rate. To support early detection, we have deployed a mobile screening unit equipped with advanced fundus cameras.”

He added that MMM Eye Care is currently the only hospital offering both home and outreach screenings using fundus camera technology. “This initiative has been a blessing, especially for senior citizens and individuals who are unable to travel, allowing them to get their eyes tested. Our mobile unit is also equipped to provide on-the-spot treatment for most common infections and minor eye injuries.”

Dr. Rajkumar added that the eyes are often the first organ to be affected by diabetes. What makes the fundus camera test unique for diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. The technology enables professionals to view the retina in 360 degrees, allowing for accurate detection of retinal diseases and disorders.

In her comments, Dr. A. Packia Sakaya Mercy said that the hospital specialises in topical cataract surgeries that do not require injections or sutures. “By using high-quality, Indian-made lenses, it offers laser-assisted cataract surgeries at significantly reduced costs—making advanced care accessible to economically affected patients. The procedure is performed in a daycare setting, eliminating the need for hospital admission. This approach not only reduces financial burden but also ensures that patients do not lose income due to extended hospital stays.”

MMM Eye Care is a 2,000 sq. ft. facility staffed by a team of four ophthalmologists and 15 support personnel. Since its soft launch last year, the hospital has performed approximately 350 eye surgeries and conducted over 100 community-level eye screening camps, demonstrating its strong focus on both clinical excellence and community outreach.
