Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India functioning under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, organised a technical session under its monthly industry outreach initiative “Manak Manthan” on the theme “Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products” at BIS, Southern Regional Office, CIT Campus, Taramani, Chennai on July 24, 2025.
The programme commenced with a Welcome Address by Shri. S.D.Dayanand, Scientist-F / Senior Director & Head, BIS – Chennai Branch Office, who outlined the key objectives of the event. He emphasised the relevance of Indian Standards on Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy products to facilitate contribution of Aluminium sector to the Circular Economy Strategy of India.
This was followed by the Keynote Address by Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Scientist-G & Deputy Director General (South), BIS highlighted the Bureau’s efforts in aligning National Standards with global benchmarks, promoting industry engagement in the standardization process, and supporting India’s vision for sustainable development. She spoke about how standardization and Management Systems Certification from BIS can enable the growth of MSMEs by improving product quality, market competitiveness, and export readiness. Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan also elaborated on the Government’s circular economy approach, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and resource efficiency. She cited aluminium recycling as a key example, explaining how it could benefit manufacturers and contribute to the larger sustainability agenda.
Shri. Vivek Joshi, Director & CEO, Sundaram Clayton Limited, was the Chief Guest for the even. In his address, he acknowledged the vital role played by Indian Standards in facilitating uniform quality norms, particularly in the context of expanding industrial applications of aluminium alloys in modern-day engineering and infrastructure. He spoke about the growing usage of aluminium, especially in the automobile industry, where its lightweight and durable properties make it a preferred material. He also highlighted the significant opportunities for industries—particularly MSMEs—involved in manufacturing and recycling aluminium and alloy products, encouraging their active participation in the evolving industrial ecosystem.
A detailed technical session was conducted by Shri. Arun Pucchakayala, Scientist-D, BIS – Chennai Branch Office presented changes envisaged through draft document for revision of IS 733 Wrought Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Bars, Rods and Sections for General Engineering Purposes which is covered under Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products under mandatory BIS certification through quality control order (QCO) from 01 Oct 2025 onwards and on a new standard being formulated on Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy scrap requirements which could be a guiding document for Aluminium alloy ingot manufacturers and users of ingots in the supply chain . Members were also sensitized about Standards Watch, weekly news bulletin for aimed at sensitizing stakeholders outside the technical committees.
During the programme, participants shared their insights and raised queries related to the implementation of standards on Aluminium alloy products and certification mechanisms adopted for these standards.
The event witnessed active participation from more than 50 stakeholders, including aluminium manufacturers, industry association members, technical professionals, regulatory representatives, and institutional users.
