IIT Guwahati launches M.Tech. Degree Program in Flood and Water Resources Management

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has launched a new M.Tech. degree program in Flood and Water Resources Management, designed specifically for working professionals and graduates aiming to enhance their skills on flood and water resources management. Offered by the Department of Civil Engineering, this degree program will be conducted in hybrid mode (classes online, labs and final exam on IIT Guwahati campus). The program is designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and applied skills to address complex challenges related to water scarcity, climate variability, and sustainable development.

A key highlight of the program is that no GATE score is needed to apply for the same. Candidates will be selected based on the written test/ interview conducted by the department.

Key program highlights include:


The Hybrid M.Tech. in Flood and Water Resources Management program will follow a semester-based system


With emphasis on integrated and sustainable water resource management, the curriculum will prepare graduates to develop data-driven solutions for flood risk assessment, hydrological modeling, and climate adaptation strategies across diverse hydrological and socio-economic contexts


Designed for working professionals having at least one-year professional experience in water resources sector


The flexible curriculum of this program will provide industry-aligned learning


The program is designed to fit into students’ professional schedule, with multi-entry and multi-exit options


No age restriction for applicants


All classes will be conducted in online mode and will be recorded for the students to learn at their own pace


All laboratories will be conducted on IIT Guwahati campus


Final examinations will be conducted on IIT Guwahati campus


Throughout the program, the students will be able to visit the IIT Guwahati campus to connect with experts, gain hands-on training in various relevant fields, and receive support from faculty members for their project work.


In addition to this, the program allows students to exit at different stages with recognised certifications. These include:


After completion of 4 courses - PG Certificate in Basics in Flood and Water Resources Management


After completion of 7 courses - PG Diploma in Flood and Water Resources Management


After competition of Two Semesters and 10 courses - Master of Science (Engineering) in Flood and Water Resources Management


After completion of Four Semesters and all courses and Capstone projects - MTech in Flood and Water Resources Management


Students who exit at PG Certificate, Diploma, or Master of Science degree stage can rejoin after a one-year gap to continue their education.


Eligibility criteria and Admission process:


4-year Bachelor's Degree (or Equivalent) in Civil/Agricultural Engineering or Allied Disciplines with at least 60% marks or 6.0/10 CPI


Minimum 1 year of professional experience in water resource sector


With expertise in advanced tools and methods including hydrological modeling, GIS, remote sensing, and flood forecasting, the graduates of this program will be fit for diverse roles in government agencies, international organisations, consultancy firms, and research institutions focused on water and climate resilience. Their expertise to design and implement sustainable water resource management strategies will play a vital role in developing adaptive strategies to manage the impacts of climate change on water systems and vulnerable communities.
