Malaysian Palm Oil Council Strengthens Ties with India to Promote Sustainable Palm Oil

The Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) recently participated in the IVPA Global RoundTable, where it discussed strategies to position Malaysian palm oil in the Indian market. MPOC CEO, Ms. Belvinder Sron, highlighted Malaysia's pivotal role in supporting India's edible oil security and announced a collaboration with the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association (IVPA) to promote the nutritional and sustainability credentials of Malaysian palm oil.

Malaysia, the world's second-largest palm oil producer, has seen a growing market share in India, from 30% in 2023 to 35% in the first half of 2025. According to Ms. Sron, the country's crude palm oil (CPO) exports to India have averaged 2.5 million MT annually over the past five years. With the recent July 2025 import duty adjustment, Malaysian CPO is now the most competitively priced edible oil in the Indian market.

Malaysian palm oil is backed by strong fundamentals, including a high level of sustainability certification. The Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification, which is legally mandated and independently audited, has certified around 90% of plantations as of 2025. The enhanced MSPO 2.0 standard, in force since January 2025, sets stricter norms on sustainability and ethics.

MPOC continues to strengthen its engagement with key Indian stakeholders to build trust and expand awareness about Malaysian palm oil. The council has signed a collaboration agreement with the Oil Technologists' Association of India (OTAI) to jointly advance nutritional education and support locally conducted research highlighting the health attributes of palm oil. Additionally, MPOC has partnered with celebrity chef Shipra Khanna to promote the nutritional benefits and culinary versatility of Malaysian palm oil through a series of cooking shows, "Bharat Ka Swaad Palm Oil Ke Saath," airing on Zee TV.

The collaboration with IVPA includes joint advocacy on regulatory issues and a consumer education campaign to promote the benefits of Malaysian palm oil. With its strong commitment to sustainability and quality, Malaysian palm oil is poised to maintain its position as a reliable and consistent supplier to India.
